#Retailers reported a 93 percent increase in the average number of shoplifting incidents per year in 2023 versus 2019 and a 90 percent increase in dollars lost due to shoplifting over the same time period, according to a new study released by the National Retail Federation (NRF). Conducted in partnership with the Loss Prevention Research Council and sponsored by Sensormatic Solutions, “The Impact of Retail Theft & Violence 2024” examines how theft and violence have evolved since before COVID-19 and how retailers are combating today’s retail crime landscape. “Retailers continue to navigate a rising retail theft landscape that has evolved significantly over time,” said NRF Vice President for Asset Protection and Retail Operations David Johnston. “Protecting store associates and customers, coupled with reducing today’s levels of violence and retail crime, requires a whole-community approach and collaboration across all stakeholders.” #RetailCrime #LawEnforcement #Pandemic #Violence #Safety

I ran across this recent study & the data is pretty much in line with the challenges being described to us by prospective retail clients. Some highlights: - Increase in Shoplifting: Retailers reported a 93% increase in shoplifting incidents and a 90% increase in dollars lost due to shoplifting from 2019 to 2023. - Violence and Aggression: 73% of retailers observed more violence and aggression from shoplifters compared to the previous year, and 91% compared to 2019. - Employee Training: 71% of retailers have increased their budgets for employee training related to workplace violence. - Organized Retail Crime (ORC): Multi-person theft incidents and ORC are on the rise, with a 57% increase in ORC incidents from 2022 to 2023. - Federal Legislation: 94% of respondents believe federal legislation is necessary to combat organized retail crime effectively. As retailers grapple with shrink and theft, the data used to measure these issues is becoming increasingly unreliable, and we're left with more questions than answers. While organized retail crime, shoplifting, and cargo theft remain concerns, self-checkout policies, locked merchandise, and loss prevention strategies are evolving in response. With fewer retailers reporting shrink data and changing public policy, what’s next in the fight against retail crime? #RetailCrime #Shrink #LossPrevention #RetailTrends #OrganizedRetailCrime #RetailNews

Kamikaze Shoplifting? I learned a new term today! UK Retailers say "Shoplifters 'out of control' and becoming more brazen." A style of shoplifting now known as Kamikaze Shoplifting where criminals are openly clearing shelves of product in full view of shoppers is sweeping the UK according to a new article by the BBC. Journalists Cherry Wilson and Jim Connolly's recent BBC piece describes a shocking rise in reported theft incidents in the #retail space. They note, "In the 12 months to September last year, incidents of customer theft reported by retailers in the UK rose by 3.7 million to 20.4 million, and cost retailers £2bn." Wow. And violence and abuse incidents towards shopworkers occurred on average 2,000 times a day, a 50% increase yoy. Keeping retail staff safe while partnering w/ local law enforcement's investigative efforts has never been more important. That's why our mission of Solving for Safer here at Motorola Solutions has never been more urgent. Battling retail theft and shrink with TSA-type exits?! Grocers are deploying different strategies to battle shrink, with technology, or people. 🕵♂️ Lidl GB is trying body worn cameras on their employees 🕵♂️ Woolworths NZ Auror’s Retail Crime Intelligence Platform works alongside stores’ security teams and law enforcement and shares intel in real-time that zeroes in on suspected thieves to help minimize crime. 🕵♂️ Loblaw Companies Limited requires customers to scan their receipts before exiting the store to prove that they have paid for all their items, or the gates don't open...like TSA Chris Walton Joe Coll The Auror solution resulted in 60% of high-profile offenders who stopped offending in stores and reducing loss by 20%. The Loblaws Inc TSA-type solution in running into some resistance with their customers (understandable), but exits and point of sales areas need to be "reimagined" to incorporate both security and less friction for the customer.
