Important points from Layla Sawyer, Secretary General of CurrENT Europe in the Panel on Technical Challenges, at today's Member State and stakeholder Conference on Electricity Grid Development in Budapest, organised by the Hungarian #EU Presidency. To prepare the grid for decarbonisation: ➡ We must get more out of the existing grid, using innovative technology already available, such as storage as a transmission asset, DLR , advanced power flow control, inertia measurements, etc. ➡ We need to find out how to plan and operate a grid with much more variable renewables ➡ We must start now to plan and build a pan-European grid that can support a truly internal electricoity market ➡ We risk assuming that we can repeat the past but at a faster speed. We cannot. It is necessary to look at new technologies, including higher capacity transmission technologies such as transmission based on advanced conductors and #superconductors. ➡ This is a marathon and there is agreement here today that we need to run it at record speed. I agree, but we also need a clear assessment of where we are in this marathon by creating logical indicators, for example in terms of grid effiiciency, raw material use, congestion levels and cost, curtailment and gigawatt kilometres. Referring to a recent study by CurrENT from Compass Lexecon, and supported by Breakthrough Energy , Sawyer said: ➡ Innovative Grid Technologies (IGTs) can provide a 35% reduction in conventional grid expansion cost or save €700 billion, not including fossil fuel import savings. IGTs cannot replace existing technologies but are a necessary addition to the system operators' toolbox. #HU24EU

A major report from the newly formed National Energy System Operator says that a decarbonised grid by 2030 is possible, but only if ‘pace is prioritised over perfection’. Commissioned by energy secretary Ed Miliband, the Clean Power in 2030 (CP30) Report is NESO’s first significant policy contribution since it was spun out of National Grid Plc in October 2024, becoming a fully public entity. NESO said achieving CP30 is ‘challenging but achievable’ and that clean sources can produce at least as much power as the island of Great Britain consumes by 2030. Today, along with Darren Davidson and Matthew Knight, I had the privilege to be invited for several working meetings with UK government officials. At the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, we had constructive discussions about the role of #hydrogen to support #decarbonisation of energy systems and the importance of first of a kind projects to de-risk technology introduction. At the Department for Business and Trade, we discussed about international partnerships and the importance of private sector to support developing skills for the future. We are making great progress at Siemens Energy to deliver technologies for 100% H2 gas turbines and compressors for UK energy networks. We have a unique portfolio of technologies that can accelerate the energy transition in UK and abroad. By setting up Great British Energy and from recent appointments, it is clear that our new government recognises the importance of collaborating with the private sector to deliver a modern and decarbonised #energy system which will become a key element of the UK’s long-term growth. Following the motto "Let's do it!", the Austrian Energy association Österreichs Energie has organised the Energie Kongress 2024 in Villach. Topics such as resilience, flexibility, expansion of renewable production, sustainable industry production, and also chances and challenges of benig a part of the Austrian energy transition have been discussed among over 600 participants. Facing the fact that the new electricity sector regulation (ElWG) could not be adopted before the Austrian national election end of September, there was consensus to prioritise the colors "red-white-red" over the color shades of individual political parties in the energy policy. A perspective that would also help us in Germany: Focus on solutions, unleash the local industry develop their own strength, and go ahead with a "let's do it" attitiude. #OEKongress #oesterreichsenergie #energytransition

Today all the DSOs associations operating in Brussels (CEDEC- European Federation of Local & Regional Energy Companies, EU DSO Entity, E.DSO, Eurelectric and GEODE - The voice of local energy distributors across Europe) organised the Breakfast Energy Session "𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭: 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧, 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲", hosted by MEP Anna Stürgkh (European Parliament). The event was an important moment of cooperation in which we aimed to inform the new MEPs and advisors about the role and the EU relevance of #DSOs. ✒️ Opening the event, MEP Anna Stürgkh stated: “Electricity grids are the backbone of the energy transition. I am pleased to see that the relevance of distribution grids has reached the necessary attention on the EU level. It is now important to adapt the legislative framework to update grids to the needs of a decentralised, renewables based and modern energy system”. The discussion was the opportunity to hear from Director Lukasz Kolinski (DG ENER, European Commission), Mr. Krzysztof (Chris) Bolesta, Poland Secretary of State in the Ministry of Climate and Environment and MEPs who joined the event and who will work on an own-initiative report on electricity grids in the coming months. To wrap up the event, the associations presented four key measures and principles of important relevance for DSOs in the next five years. 🇪🇺 Introduce a grid mainstreaming approach to ensure DSOs’ needs are considered in every new and revised regulation. 📈 Align EU financing instruments with the net-zero targets and DSOs’ needs to gear #investments towards the required development of the distribution grid. New EU Competitiveness Funds and other funding for infrastructure should ensure easier access for DSOs to that funding, taking into account their regulation. 🤝 Ensure the #EUGreenDeal’s implementation on the ground by enabling anticipatory investments, ensuring faster-permitting procedures, supporting the #supplychain, and providing suitable and forward-looking regulatory framework to guarantee the right investment-friendly environment. 🧑🏫 Launch a European Grid Academy within the framework of the EU’s Net-Zero Academies to build and develop the right #skills in the direct & indirect grid value chain to address the labour market shortages and transformation. 👏 Thank you to all the participants for the engaging and fruitful discussion! At the #JRC we finished the year 2024 with a new little brief full of interesting insights (main authors Rade Cadjenovic Jean-Francois Vuillaume) This "Science for Policy brief" explores the potential of interconnecting the EU's energy system with its #SouthernNeighbourhood, i.e. African countries lying on the other side of the #Mediterranean. We simulated few optimistic scenarios to understand how currently planned interconnectors can affect the EU Internal Energy market, not only on wholesale #electricity but also on #hydrogen. It would be very interesting to equally understand the impact on the Southern Neighbourhood countries' energy system. This little piece of research is quite timely as the European Commission is looking with renewed interest at the Mediterranean: we now have a dedicated Commissioner (Dubravka Šuica) and her Mission Letter calls for the set up of a "Trans-Mediterranean Energy and Clean Tech Cooperation Initiative to increase renewable energy trading and boost clean tech manufacturing in the region, notably through #GlobalGateway." We observe the possibility to obtain slightly decreased electricity and hydrogen prices in those EU market zones directly connected to the interconnectors, although this of course is just a really limited set of simulations that should be placed in a wider context. 🔗 Interconnectivity: A Key to Stable, Affordable Energy Prices Belgium’s Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten is making a strong case for strengthening Europe’s energy interconnections. In her interview with Nikolaus Johann Kurmayer for Euractiv, she emphasized the importance of collaborative approaches to stabilize energy prices and boost supply security. 🔌 “Better interconnectivity isn’t just about sharing energy, it’s about reducing price volatility, cutting fuel use, and driving down system costs. Belgium’s robust grid connections have stabilized domestic prices while benefiting neighboring countries, demonstrating how interconnected grids support resilience and efficiency” Minister van der Straeten highlights that interconnectors can ensure resilience when countries face climate-induced challenges on their energy system like in Norway. CurrENT fully supports a more interconnected and optimized grid in Europe. Efficient and optimized electricity grids aided by the widescale deployment of #InnovativeGridTechnologies can maximize the benefits of interconnectivity. To avoid the worst effects of #ClimateChange, we must advance the #EnergyTransition – in a joint effort. In Europe, politicians regularly come together with leaders from the energy industry at the Roundtable on Europe’s Energy Future (REEF) in Brussels. The meeting aims to ensure the right conditions across the #energy sector. ⚡ For grids, we mainly see the following five points: 1️⃣ improving long-term planning; 2️⃣ sufficient private and public sector finance for projects; 3️⃣ strengthening the supply chain; 4️⃣ harmonization and standardization of technologies and processes to achieve economies of scale; 5️⃣ functional tenders that shall focus on prescribing only the key functions of the #GridTechnologies. And as we see a faster build-out of offshore #renewables we also need to improve the resilience of meshed and interconnected grids in a multi-country approach. I want to thank the Belgian Presidency for organizing this event and, in particular, for their attendance at the event, the EU Energy Commissioner, Kadri Simson; Minister Tinne Van der Straeten; Minister Lars Aagaard; German state secretary for Energy Philipp Nimmermann; Mechthild Wörsdörfer, and Catharina Sikow-Magny. Together, we can make it happen!✨ #GridActionPlan #GridTechnologies
