Important points from Layla Sawyer, Secretary General of CurrENT Europe in the Panel on Technical Challenges, at today's Member State and stakeholder Conference on Electricity Grid Development in Budapest, organised by the Hungarian #EU Presidency. To prepare the grid for decarbonisation: ➡ We must get more out of the existing grid, using innovative technology already available, such as storage as a transmission asset, DLR , advanced power flow control, inertia measurements, etc. ➡ We need to find out how to plan and operate a grid with much more variable renewables ➡ We must start now to plan and build a pan-European grid that can support a truly internal electricoity market ➡ We risk assuming that we can repeat the past but at a faster speed. We cannot. It is necessary to look at new technologies, including higher capacity transmission technologies such as transmission based on advanced conductors and #superconductors. ➡ This is a marathon and there is agreement here today that we need to run it at record speed. I agree, but we also need a clear assessment of where we are in this marathon by creating logical indicators, for example in terms of grid effiiciency, raw material use, congestion levels and cost, curtailment and gigawatt kilometres. Referring to a recent study by CurrENT from Compass Lexecon, and supported by Breakthrough Energy , Sawyer said: ➡ Innovative Grid Technologies (IGTs) can provide a 35% reduction in conventional grid expansion cost or save €700 billion, not including fossil fuel import savings. IGTs cannot replace existing technologies but are a necessary addition to the system operators' toolbox. #HU24EU
