Have you considered the mental health and wellbeing effects of AI? I hadn't either .. until I read Helen Cook's article. Helen Chief People and Communications Officer at Finastra shared an interesting perspective on how using AI tools for more basic tasks can lead to a shift in people's own sense of satisfaction, productivity and efficiency, as they're only left with highly complexed tasks. This can lead to: 📈 Increase in stress levels as people are only processing highly complex tasks and more frequently as the world of business moves faster and faster where humans try to keep up with the AI pace of change A few things we can do to mitigate these risks: ❤ Educate and encourage leaders to understand the importance of their own wellbeing e.g. eating well, sleeping, taking regular breaks, exercise etc. with the aim of having a healthy, more engaged, motivated workforce 🤝🏻 Encourage leaders to support their team with honesty and humility ~ we're all in this so we need to respond with empathy and encourage test and learn approaches as it may take some time for us to adjust We're at the forefront as AI and human capability become interdependent and to be able to cope we need to adapt our practices and work life balance as 💥 it's coming whether we like it or not!! 💥 Thanks for sharing your interesting perspective Helen - it really got me thinking differently. #aiwellbeing #mentalhealth #wellbeing #finastra

On one hand, AI can automate repetitive tasks, streamline workflows, and even reduce decision fatigue. On the other hand, the pressure to adapt to new technologies, manage AI systems, and handle AI fatigue—a term used to describe the overwhelm caused by overreliance on AI tools—can be a stressor in itself. #AI #AIatWork #workplaceai

Across four studies, employees who use AI as a core part of their jobs reported feeling lonelier, drinking more, and suffering from insomnia more than employees who don’t. Wow. These findings highlight the need for organizations to address the mental and emotional well-being of employees as they integrate AI into the workplace. Implementing support systems, fostering a culture of open communication, and providing resources for mental health can help mitigate these negative effects. Organizations across all industries need to work on prioritizing employee well-being to ensure a more balanced and productive work environment as AI continues to grow. What if, in our pursuit of efficiency and innovation through the development and integration of AI in the workplace, we are inadvertently jeopardising the well-being of our workforce? A really interesting new study highlights the downsides of AI implementation and increased workplace usage. There are practical steps leaders should take now to prioritise employee well-being in an increasingly AI-driven world. The study reveals increased loneliness and isolation, stemming from reduced human interaction and a sense of being replaced or devalued by AI systems. Add to that an increase in difficulty sleeping and in after-work alcohol consumption. Both linked to increased stress and cognitive load. AI has the potential to transform the workplace for the better, but only if we prioritize the human element. By taking a proactive approach to employee well-being, leaders can mitigate the potential downsides of AI implementation: Well-Being Indicators: Establish and track metrics related to employee wellbeing, diving into areas such as stress and human connection. Implement engagement and well-being surveys, track and communicate outcomes and actions consistently. Foster Social Connection: Create opportunities for employees to connect with each other, even in AI-augmented workplaces. From social activities, to mentorship programs, ensure connections amongst your people. Proactive Transparency: Openly communicate with your teams about AI initiatives, addressing concerns about job security and providing opportunities for training and upskilling. Mental Health Support: Offer access to mental health resources, such as stress management and employee assistance programs. #AI #FutureofWork #EmployeeWellbeing #MentalHealth #WorkplaceCulture #Leadership #HR #DigitalTransformation #Innovation #Ethics

🌐 Loneliness at Work: The Hidden Cost of AI? 🌐 In today's fast-paced, tech-driven world, AI is revolutionizing the workplace. But at what cost? A recent study by Harvard Business Review reveals that while AI boosts efficiency, it also contributes to increased feelings of loneliness and decreased well-being among employees. 🤖 Is AI Hurting or Helping the Workplace? AI's ability to automate tasks and streamline processes is undeniable. However, as AI takes over more routine tasks, human interaction diminishes, leading to a more isolated workforce. The lack of meaningful connections at work can lead to loneliness, which has serious implications for mental health and overall job satisfaction. 🛠 Combating Loneliness Without Being Left Behind The question is, how can we harness the benefits of AI without sacrificing our well-being? Here are a few ideas: 1. Foster Human Connections: Encourage regular team meetings and social interactions, both virtual and in-person, to maintain a sense of community. 2. Promote Mental Health: Implement mental health programs and resources to support employees feeling isolated. 3. Balance Tech and Touch: While AI can handle routine tasks, ensure there are ample opportunities for human engagement in the workplace. 💬 Join the Conversation What are your thoughts? Is AI an asset or a liability in the workplace? How can we balance the efficiency of AI with the need for human connection? Share your insights and experiences! Remarkable stuff here; check it out (HBR gives you a certain number of free reads each month; unless you've exhausted your quota, no need to worry about hitting a paywall.) The researchers conducted a series of studies on the effects of extensive workplace AI use on social connection there. Here's the authors' summary: Quote Overall, these results show that the more employees collaborated with AI — as it helped to complete more tasks than ever — the more they felt socially deprived as work took over their entire day. This situation of not being connected to humans during the workday awakened a strong human desire to connect with others at work. So, while their interactions with AI made employees less socially connected with their coworkers, this situation led them to take action to reconnect. However, despite these actions, these employees still reported feeling isolated and socially adrift. That is, their interactions with AI made them more efficient and capable of doing much more work, but at the same time left them feeling lonely, which resulted in employees being more likely to resort to alcohol and suffer from insomnia — telltale and worrying signs of social malaise and ill-being, which research shows have negative impacts on quality of life, mood, cognitive function, behavior, and health overall. These findings paint a complex picture of the social costs of AI in the workplace. On one level, AI-induced isolation may spur employees to invest more in their human relationships, to seek out the social nourishment they’re missing. But on a deeper level, it may erode the very foundation of those relationships — the sense of authentic, shared humanity that underpins true connection and collaboration and as a result undermine their mental and physical health. 📢 **New Research Alert: The Impact of AI on Workplace Well-being** 📢 A recent Harvard Business Review study sheds light on how AI adoption in the workplace affects employee well-being. The research by David De Cremer and Joel Koopman reveals some eye-opening findings. Key Insights: 1. Increased Isolation: Heavy AI users report feeling more isolated. The efficiency AI brings often comes at the cost of human interaction, vital for mental health. 2. Negative Health Effects: There's a correlation between AI usage and negative health outcomes like increased alcohol consumption and insomnia. High AI usage correlates with more stress and loneliness. 3. Efficiency vs. Connection: AI boosts productivity but reduces social interactions, leading to lower job satisfaction and mental health. Recommendations: 1. Monitor Well-being: Regularly check on employees' mental and social health, not just productivity. Use surveys and feedback sessions to spot issues early. 2. Redesign Workflows: Integrate AI to enhance human strengths and ensure workflows allow meaningful human interaction. 3. View AI as a Tool: Use AI to augment, not replace, human potential. Create opportunities for social interaction and team-building. Balancing AI efficiency with human well-being is crucial. Organizations must prioritize employee health to maintain a productive and engaged workforce.
