What a great message that is... Focus on what matters... Do we, #focus on what matters? This photo is regarding wanting to be on the best 5G net...but it is...in of itself a great question...period. Then I started thinking about my transition from Active Duty service to Corporate America and why I was successful in that transition. After some thought it became clear that it was because I focused on the things that matter, to me. Career: Find a position that pays what I need and has the growth potential to provide stability for at least 5 years, for example. Family: Find a Position that afforded me the flexibility to produce AND take care of things at home. Anyone with kids will understand this! This allowed me to be more present for the moments that matter. Vacation: Find a position that provides a reasonable PTO and Vacation benefit so I can spend more quality time with family & heal up, when I need it. Benefits: Find an employer that not only has a competitive 401K match but also offers stock rewards; not to mention medical benefits (PMP, Eye, Dental). Culture: Find an employer that beats to the sound of a similar drum as my own. Is the employer in alignment with your personal beliefs and values? If so, you will be even more motivated to perform and be involved vs being on an adversarial path at every step. Are you including all these things in your transition planning? INDIANAPOLIS, IN — On September 12 at 5 PM, the Fay Biccard Glick Neighborhood Center will host a Workforce Opportunity Fair, a key event to connect local community members with training for in-demand jobs. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Fay Biccard Glick Neighborhood Center, The Darden Group, and The Latina Welding Guild, organizations dedicated to empowering individuals with the skills needed for high-demand careers. The fair will feature opportunities in welding, HVAC training, construction classes, and more, aiming to equip attendees with the tools to secure stable and well-paying jobs. In recognition of the growing demand for skilled labor, the event organizers are committed to making these opportunities accessible to all. As an added incentive, eligible students who attend the event will have the chance to receive either a $50 gas card or a $30 bus card to assist with transportation costs. This gesture underscores the organizers' commitment to removing barriers and ensuring that everyone has the chance to benefit from these training programs. We understand the value of these skills in today's job market and how crucial they are for the economic well-being of our community. This fair is not just about job training—it's about creating opportunities and building a stronger community. The Workforce Opportunity Fair is open to all community members looking to enhance their skills and explore new career paths. Ending the year by hitting an HR milestone: more than 50% of my staff is justice-impacted. And here’s the unpopular truth - it’s not always easy. Hiring folks that have been exposed to the traumas of our (in)justice system often means a different approach to hiring, onboarding, and day-to-day operations. I don’t always get it right. But I’m committed to creating safe spaces for those I hire AND other employers. We have to be able to talk about the challenges instead of just being cheerleaders for the justice-impacted community. 👀 Here’s my North Star: I wouldn’t ask someone who came home from the military to “figure it out” on day one. It’s a process and one I can trust because, at the center of it, are people like me who just want to put food on the table for their loved ones. It’s not always easy to navigate. But then there are days when, at a job fair, I got to teach someone to waltz because they hadn’t in two decades and had a wedding coming up. HR is weird and sometimes wonderful. It might not always be easy. It is, however, always worth it. Here’s to hitting more goals in 2025. And to more waltzes too! #fairchanceopportunities
