Books:: The present book is the English translation of Louis Hjelmslev’s lectures on glossematics, the theory of language developed in the forties by him and Hans Jørgen Uldall, and taught at the University of Copenhagen in 1942-43, thoroughly taken down in shorthand by his student Harry Wett Frederiksen. Heading down to London today to join THE ENGLISH ASSOCIATION at Senate House to discuss the impact of AI on English teaching. Here are three things I’ll be exploring: 1️⃣ We spend too much energy fighting plagiarism. We’re looking in the wrong direction. Better to think about how students can maximise their intellect by using AI as an ideation and planning tool which frees cognitive surplus to invest in thinking big thoughts. 2️⃣ It will be the linguists who conquer the human/AI hybrid world. Not the computer scientists. This is why I prefer the term prompt psychology to prompt engineering. Compare it to biology. You don’t need to understand the complexities of cellular organisms to influence others. 3️⃣ However: understanding how a transformer model works helps to understand how to break it out of its predictive nature through creative prompting. What do you think? Am I on the right track? Some influencers believe only those with a PhD in computer science have the right to teach others about how to use AI. Funnily enough I strongly disagree. One thing’s for sure. My Literature degree suddenly makes a lot more sense.

It's always exciting to learn your words have reached a new audience. It's mind-boggling, though, when they reach that audience in a script you can't even read! Thanks to the team at Princeton University Press, their partners at Faces Publications, and (if I can trust Google Lens) translator Xie Ping for creating this edition of LEAVING ACADEMIA in traditional Chinese!!
