In A Just Future, I underscore the fact that college faculty play an enormous role determining the academic success of historically marginalized students who may struggle at elite institutions. There are plenty of ways faculty have learned to improve their teaching, through inclusive pedagogy, for instance. But let's not overlook the valuable role of mentorship, a more fraught enterprise now that our increasingly diverse student body looks different than our faculty body. In traditionally white disciplines -- like European history -- who do predominantly white faculty identify as promising? Who might they overlook in the process? With what consequence? Take a look: https://lnkd.in/gnfThXZH

For over two semesters, I was able to work with amazing peers Yuanqi (Suzy) Wang and Yu(Wendy) Wu to conduct a qualitative study aimed at further study of free speech policies on college campuses post-October 7th, 2023. Two central findings we uncovered are that first, there is a need for more nuanced and adaptable free speech policies over rigid neutrality or suppression on college campuses. Second, universities must develop more sophisticated mechanisms for engaging with complex, emotionally charged issues while protecting the fundamental principles of freedom of expression and the safety of the community. Implications for policymakers include the fact that this research contributes to a critical dialogue about the function of higher education in a democratic society. It challenges universities to reimagine their role as not just neutral observers but active facilitators of meaningful dialogue, critical thinking, and social understanding. It has been an incredible journey completing my first research paper, spanning over a dozen interviews across two states at two higher education institutions. Here's to next semester, only four more to go! #DoctoralJourney #Vanderbilt #PeabodyCollege #HigherEd

📢 Thrilled to Announce Our Latest Publication! We are excited to share our newest article, where we put Cultural Mismatch Theory to the test, now published in the Journal of Social Issues. In this study, we investigated how the cultural fit of self-construals with the average self-construal patterns of high-SES and majority peers influenced the academic achievement of secondary school students in Flanders. Our findings reveal that aligning with both high-SES and majority self-construal patterns significantly benefited students across all domains of achievement tested: Dutch and maths grades, as well as their objective test scores. This work sheds light on the critical role of cultural fit in understanding academic achievement and contributes to the broader discourse on educational inequality and cultural diversity in schools. A heartfelt thanks to my collaborators, Karen Phalet and Jozefien De Leersnyder, for their invaluable contributions to this article! Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dX3Qy79G I look forward to hearing your thoughts and engaging in discussions about these findings!
