Everything started when one of SAP founders Hasso Plattner got inspired by the Power of Design article featuring IDEO Human-centered design methodology.
Now, 20 years later, we celebrated 11 years of the SAP AppHaus Palo Alto in an amazing office reopening event. Our history of humanizing business software and making innovation real brought us several design awards and proof that good design is good business.
I couldn't be more proud of our accomplishments.
The celebration was magical! Kudos to Robert Strong!
The celebration motivated each of us to design the future! Kudos to Lisa Kay Solomon from The Stanford d.school
The celebration inspired everyone to live our values and innovate for a sustainable world! Kudos to Omar Mitchell from National Hockey League (NHL)

🧬 The SAP AppHaus is in our Bluestonex DNA 🧬
It’s what separates us from most solution and services providers within our industry.
I was discussing today, how this USP is valued in the market. It’s fair to say our customers have always valued the Human Center Design approach and continue to this day to prosper thanks to applications we have delivered with their users at the heart.
I do wonder, how often businesses must look past implementing solutions that deliver excellence and users prosper with them as apposed to implementing solutions that check technical requirements but save a few £££
Would you pay more for great user experience?

We're proud to be part of a community with the edge on innovation!
Being part of the SAP AppHaus Network means being part of an exclusive global community that's all about innovation through human-centred design. SAP faces turning point as Hasso Plattner steps down:
Departure of CEO Hasso Plattner marks the end of the founding era at SAP, and adds further complexities for the German software multinational as it faces ongoing restructuring efforts, among many other challenges to solve.
It’s difficult to imagine SAP without Hasso Plattner, who’s been there from the beginning and has significantly shaped the fortunes of Europe’s largest software manufacturer for more than five decades as founder, board of directors member, and, most recently, as chairman of the supervisory board. Now at 80, Plattner is giving up his post at the head of the supervisory board and leaving the SAP stage.
In April 1972 five former IBM employees founded Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung GbR, which later became SAP, in Weinheim. From the very beginning, the key design principle at SAP has been the integration of individual components where users could perform tasks. In the first few years, they programmed modules for financial accounting, purchasing, inventory management, order receipt, material planning, and invoicing and auditing. The concept of an integrated system in combination with increasingly powerful computer architectures from IBM and Siemens meant a revolution in the early days.
It was the starting point of an unparalleled success story that has remained closely linked over the decades with the original founders, mostly Dietmar Hopp and Hasso Plattner. While IT startups today are inflated by investors with billions of dollars and under enormous pressure, things were more leisurely at SAP in the beginning. “We were very lucky and in the right place at the right time,” Hopp said in a 2015 interview with NWZ. “Our startup phase lasted about 10 to 15 years.”
After the IPO in 1988, Hopp and Plattner shared power at SAP by mutual agreement. Hopp took over the position of CEO until 1998 and Plattner took care of technology and development, as well as SAP’s important entry into the US market. “The period between 1988 and 1992 was wonderful,” Plattner said in an interview with the Smithsonian Awards Program’s Oral History Project. “I spent every day developing software. It was a great time.”

Yesterday, I attended a session with Marty Cagan at SAP, which is undergoing a transformation to evolve into an empowered product operating model. Even though I’ve read his books, it was a great refresher—thanks, Marty, for the insights.
A major takeaway was why big enterprises often struggle with innovation. When engineers and designers are disconnected from customer insights, they miss crucial feedback that could shape their work. Bureaucracy creates silos, slowing down collaboration and stifling the flow of ideas. Real innovation doesn’t come from the top down; it comes from those closest to the problem and the product. These are the people who can drive meaningful change, but they need to be empowered, involved early, and have their incentives aligned with the product vision.
Let’s be clear: we must empower the builders, set the right context, and give them the freedom to innovate. That’s how we create something innovative.

Let´s talk about “Rising Yellow”
Every color has a meaning. With regard to the IT environment I work in, I really like Yellow, because it stands for innovation.
At All for One, innovation is not just a technological necessity - it is a driver of personal growth and self-realisation. Those who are prepared to break new ground, think boldly and contribute their ideas not only actively shape their own future, but also the success of our company.
And to make it clear: I´m not talking about disruptive innovation and rocket science. Innovation starts with each individual and even simple new ideas that are realised can make the difference.
As an innovation you can also understand using empathy at work - nothing new you say, but how many leaders know what's going on with their co-workers? How many times did you hear question "what's up?" but not about job? Let's keep it in mind, that using old soft-tools can be also innovated, and we're doing our best to do it day after day :)
Are there any other fans of Innovation and “Rising Yellow” here?
