For me personally, the environment is the driving force behind what we do and why we do it. Unfortunately, we live in a capitalistic world controlled by a species that is very bad at preventive measures and only engages in cleaning mode when it's too late. Humans are also very bad at handling radical changes, hence why they prefer to incrementally make changes in existing systems. Having said this, if we can't develop a technology that is faster and cheaper than existing ones, I doubt we'd get far. Sadly very few care about the environment unless the outcome from a new technology is cheaper than their existing one. Curious to know how far we are on our journey to being able to beat the Asians at their game, drop us a note :-)

Excellent Drupa analysis from Gareth Ward, and essential reading for anyone planning a visit to Düsseldorf. As Gareth points out the world has changed in ways we could not have imagined - notably socially, technologically - since the last show, eight years ago. One other change - as unimaginable as undesirable - not mentioned, is that when Drupa last happened, Britain's internal market stretched from Lisbon to the border of Belarus, and that internal market has now shrunk by nearly 90%. In fact, Britain, idiotically, now has the same level of relations with the rest of the continent as Belarus. At a time when, for instance, inkjet technology has brought garment production to Europe - reducing time to market and helping high street stores compete - the UK chases tuppeny-ha'penny detrimental 'deals' with countries 12 time zones away. At the same time, the food, pharma and haulage industries are sounding alarm bells about the state of UK supply chains, and packaging-print will feel the consequences. Therefore, I would argue, it is not just technological changes that will accelerate shorter, more sustainable, less risky supply chains (near-shoring), but political ones: that will require print and packaging industry associations to get off the fence, and put pressure on the Labour government-in-waiting, to push for Britain to be back in the single market, as a minimum.

Innovation Story: Don't fear failure—failures can lead to innovation! Take the story of 3M's Post-it Notes. In 1968, Spencer Silver, a 3M scientist, tried to create a strong adhesive but ended up with a weak, reusable one. Initially deemed a failure, it found no practical application until 1974, when Art Fry used it to solve his problem of bookmarks falling out. He applied the adhesive to small pieces of paper, creating Post-it Notes. Launched in 1980, they became an instant success, embraced worldwide for their convenience. 3M continued to innovate, expanding the product line. In a recent YouTube video discussing the EU's push for sustainability, it becomes clear that Brother’s practices undermine the European Green Deal’s goals of circular economy and resource conservation. By keeping empty cartridges out of the hands of remanufacturers, Brother essentially monopolizes the remanufacturing process, blocking smaller companies from participating. This limits competition, driving up prices for consumers and reducing choices in the market. Remanufacturers could otherwise help reduce electronic waste, prolong cartridge life, and lower costs. The video highlights how this approach contradicts the EU's agenda to promote more eco-friendly and open markets. It emphasizes the need for OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) like Brother to adapt to sustainable practices that don’t stifle independent competitors but instead foster innovation and resource efficiency. In conclusion, Brother’s restrictive cartridge policies not only impede fair competition but also undermine sustainability efforts. Patents are often associated with high-tech innovations or complex machinery. However, some of the most impactful inventions are simple, everyday ideas that solve common problems. A great example is Post-it Notes. In 1968, Dr. Spencer Silver, a chemist at 3M, was working on a project to create a super-strong adhesive. But instead of a powerful glue, he ended up with something entirely unexpected—a low-tack adhesive that could stick to surfaces and peel off cleanly without leaving any residue. At that time, it seemed like a solution without a problem. Still, Silver believed it had potential and spent years trying to showcase its value to his colleagues at 3M. Fast forward to 1974, when Art Fry, another scientist at 3M, faced a frustrating issue: his bookmarks kept slipping out of his choir hymnal during practice. That’s when he remembered Silver’s adhesive. Fry realized it could be used to create sticky, removable notes, and the idea for Post-it Notes was born. What started as an accident became one of the most revolutionary tools in organization and collaboration.
