Why I wrote this—and why now:
As a filmmaker, scholar, and advocate for human creativity, I felt compelled to address how artificial intelligence is reshaping the cinematic landscape. Cinema has long been a mirror to humanity, reflecting our shared stories, emotions, and dreams. But as AI rapidly integrates into the industry, we face critical choices about its role. Will it serve as a tool to expand our creative potential, or will it threaten the emotional core and artistry that define cinema? I wrote this piece to spark dialogue on how we can lead this transformation thoughtfully, rather than react passively to its inevitability.
A filmmaker’s perspective:
Approaching this topic, I drew on my experiences as a filmmaker who has navigated past technological shifts, including the digital revolution. Twenty years ago, skeptics worried digital tools would erode the essence of cinema. Instead, they democratized storytelling, elevated creativity, and unlocked new ways to reach audiences. I see AI as a similarly pivotal force—one that holds immense promise if guided with care and intention. My hope is to encourage filmmakers and industry leaders to embrace AI as a complement to human creativity, not as a replacement.
