How to avoid being a puppet in communication

View profile for Robert Pickard

Public relations for leaders – of counsel to names in the news. Leadership communication authority. Expert in geopolitical comms. Battle-hardened in complex international issues management.

PR pro-tip: if you do NOT want to be known as someone else’s puppet, then refrain from telling people you are NOT that someone else’s puppet. When the inevitable media publicity comes, guess what impression is made in the public mind? This is a common misconception in communication, the assumption that named denials using the word NOT ‘X’ are somehow effective. More often than not, NOT denials ironically serve to spread and cement the opposite sentiment. https://lnkd.in/eh9DqpfU #leadershipcommunication #publicrelations #mediarelations #comms #pr

Not repeating a negative is a foundational element of any worthwhile media training exercise. Instead, say something like “that’s an absurd characterization”, then pivot back to the central point.

Great reminder of common sense communication, Robert! As one philosopher once pointed out “if you say God does not exist, you are already embracing the concept of God”.
