Women have historically been underrepresented in boardrooms worldwide, especially within the energy and associated sectors.
The International Energy Association (IEA) 2022 Report calculated that women hold less than 14% of senior management roles across nearly 2,500 global energy firms. While utility sectors lead with 17% representation, challenges persist with over 25% of firms showing no women in senior roles.
While work remains, progress in the utilities-related industry has been significant, thanks to pioneering women who paved the way. The industry owes a collective debt of gratitude to these women who persevered to reach the senior roles they now hold.
Shout out to Ronel le Roux for being a trailblazer in the utility management industry. She shares some challenges she faced at the start of her career: “One of my biggest challenges was not being taken seriously because of my gender. I recall an incident where a client requested a man to assist with electricity and reticulation changes, implying that women don't belong in this industry. Overcoming such challenges requires resilience, consistent performance, and results. I focus on building strong relationships, demonstrating my technical competence, and leveraging my achievements to challenge outdated perceptions.”
This Women’s Month, let's celebrate these trailblazers and continue to strive for greater diversity and inclusion in the utilities-related industry. #RMSWomensMonth24 #WomenInUtilities #DiversityInLeadership #BreakingBarriers
