First day here at IFAT is over. The event has certainly lived up to its reputation as the biggest and best water related tradeshow on the planet. From a sensor point of view, have not been seen anything with that “oh wow factor” yet , I plan on taking a trip over to one of the other halls where there is a start-up and innovation sector. At a brief glance it does look as though there are some exciting bio sensor companies just coming to market. More on that tomorrow. One thing, which is definitely topical, that I did see, is an ultra low level, online, total ammoniacal nitrogen analyser. It is in use with several German water companies monitoring ammonia levels in rivers down to as low as 10 ppb, yes that’s right per billion. No, it is not portable, it does use reagents and so it is highly unlikely to be deployed any time soon upstream and downstream of a CSO, but and this is an important but, this type of technology could form an important extra layer when accurate “state of our rivers” monitoring is needed. Installed in the back of a 4 x 4 it could be used as part of a an event investigation.

Preview: The IFAT worldwide 2024 takes place from May 13 to 17 in Munich, Germany. One central topic at the largest trade fair for environmental technology are new technologies for wastewater treatment.   Fresh water in sufficient quantity and good quality is indispensable for humans and nature. However, surface and groundwater around the world are under enormous pressure through industrial wastewater, the use of pesticides and other factors. For this reason, it is important to detect germs, bacteria and other pathogens in water early.   Our InBaDtec project aims to realize automated preparation of water samples in prior to the use of qPCR analysis. It allows the direct on-site detection of pathogens in water from large amounts of water (one liter or more) in as fast as one hour. The integrated steps are mainly pre-cleaning, microorganism concentration, lysis, mixing and PCR. The SUIKI Team is happy to report that the Scenarios PFAS Workshop in Denmark was a great networking success and a pleasure to attend! 💧 We were thrilled to attend the Scenarios PFAS Workshop held at the Kobaek Strand Conference Center on September 3-4, 2024, and to hear different perspectives from existing PFAS spaces. This pivotal event gathered researchers, experts, policymakers, industry representatives, and innovators from around the globe to tackle the pressing issue of PFAS contamination, providing a platform for everyone to share their expertise, pains, and learnings through presentations, panel discussions, and technology demonstrations. The strategic location of the event, representing ground zero of PFAS contamination in Denmark, allowed for some great on-site demonstrations and discussions. The workshop delved into state-of-the-art technologies for PFAS remediation and destruction with some key insights into different technology approaches. Helena Hinrichsen from Envytech Solutions AB presented their latest results in PFAS removal with the SAFF method, Jamie Dawson from Puraffinity unveiled their latest innovations in PFAS adsorption efforts, and we had the pleasure of hearing the US perspective on the PFAS issue, with talks by Revive Environmental, Aquagga Inc., and Enspired Solutions, discussing their different PFAS destruction solutions in detail and sharing some general learnings from their great piloting efforts with the room. Discussions also highlighted challenges in PFAS detection, impact assessment, and the necessity for improved regulation and industrial adaptation. Additionally, there were insights into how institutions can get funding for PFAS research or how companies can de-risk their PFAS ventures through available EU funding. Engaging sessions addressed industry-specific requirements, the economic feasibility of PFAS treatment, and the hurdles in adopting new technologies. It was an incredible opportunity to network and explore potential partnerships with companies and experts dedicated to tackling PFAS. At SUIKI, we are committed to pioneering efficient PFAS destruction solutions and are currently seeking reliable partners to collaborate on scaling up our pilot system. The only way we can solve the generational issue of PFAS contamination is if we work together and learn together, as there is always more to learn when it comes to PFAS. We're bubbling with anticipation to start trialing new Nanobubble Oxygenation technology. Last week we won $50,000 from the Victorian Water Minister’s Climate Innovation Challenge prize pool to trial new energy-efficient aeration technology at the Neerim South wastewater treatment plant. Adrian, our Manager Wastewater Treatment is leading the research. It's an innovative solution that we think will reduce operational costs and the amount of electricity needed to treat wastewater. I hand on heart feel that we are creating 'clear water' between ourselves and other events in the bioeconomy. What is this 'clear water' attributed too? Lets refrain from a list of USP's where the U (Unique) is questionable and lets reduce it down to the two tangibles (F&F) of focus and format. Focus. Everything we do is focused on driving the commercialisation of the sector. It's about understanding who needs to meet who and facilitating that connection. Who is raising capital, who wants to invest, who is looking for an off take partner, who needs an outsourced R&D function etc etc. We will not be distracted (by star gazing) from our mission to scale this sector. Format. People are starting to really value our 'meetings first' format. The conference is highly valuable but it's simply not as valuable as pre arranged 1-2-1 commercial meetings when you are trying to scale an embryonic sector. It HAS to be about connections, business development, sales leads, pipelines and deal creation... seriously, what else matters? The positive feedback we receive when one of our attendees goes to a 'traditional conference or expo' gives us the confidence to stick to our principals and keep driving home our value proposition.
