In the Age of Generative AI, Schools Must Cultivate Learner Identity and Agency As generative AI reshapes the educational landscape, the demand on students to actively manage their own learning journeys is increasing significantly. To thrive, students must not only understand their own identities and values but also actively direct their educational paths. This involves leveraging resources to overcome challenges, exploring personal interests, and fostering resilience and self-motivation. Educators play a crucial role in this transformative process. With Chris L. and #EquitybyDesign, we've engaged with leading educators and thinkers to discuss how schools can effectively support this development. The key question we're addressing is: How can schools empower students to develop a strong sense of identity and agency, enabling them to take control and navigate the complexities of life and learning? Discover strategies and insights in our "Learner Identity and Agency Guidebook," available now for those looking to deepen their understanding and implementation of these crucial educational practices. Educating students on the adoption of emerging artificial intelligence #AI technologies is crucial for facilitating the integration of innovative technologies and enhancing global welfare.
By 2025, more than 70% of the world’s population will live in cities. We must work together now to help create more accessible and connected cities and communities. #AI, especially in the hands of young minds, can help us do that. Today, we are thrilled to announce the fifth year of our #MadeToMoveCommunities program, which challenges students from around the world to focus on proposing mobility enhancements within their communities using AI-driven solutions! Guided by Otis mentors, 250+ students from 15+ countries and territories will apply #STEM learnings to develop ground-breaking inclusive mobility solutions and compete to win funding to further STEM programs in their schools. Click here to learn more about the program and to track the progress of our colleagues and student participants. https://lnkd.in/eVR3atPz

🚀 Exciting News! I’m thrilled to share that I’ve received my first external grant as a PI since joining the University of Florida—a ~$500K grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through the program AI-Powered Innovations in Mathematics Teaching & Learning! 🎉 Project Overview: The goal of this one-year project is to explore and evaluate the use of large and small language models (LLMs and SLMs) to develop ProductiveMath, an AI-powered web application that supports teachers and students through various phases of productive failure teaching method. ProductiveMath uses generative AI to generate complex, standards-aligned math problems tailored to students' prior knowledge and interests, enhancing both engagement and accessibility. This application will also provide AI-driven, stealth assessments to foster students’ collaboration and creativity during and after the problem-solving process. My co-PIs on this project are Anthony Botelho and Avery Closser, and I’m honored to have Manu Kapur, who introduced the idea of Productive Failure, serving as an advisor. I would like to thank my amazing students and Dr. Botelho's students who helped create a functioning prototype of ProductiveMath over the last summer and this fall, which led to our success in securing this grant. This project demonstrates the thoughtful application of GenAI in K-12 education, integrating principles from HCI and Learning Experience Design (LXD) to create supportive, AI-powered learning tools. 🔍 #AIinEducation #K12 #GenerativeAI #ProductiveFailure #MathEducation #EducationalTechnology #TeacherSupport #StudentEngagement #BillAndMelindaGatesFoundation #UFCOE #EdTech

I keep thinking about one session from the Create! Conference I attended last week. It was a cross-curricular, melding technology with differentiation to meet ELA and Social Studies Standards. It was EXACTLY what I've been hoping to see in practice. ✅It was what education should look like. ✅It gave students agency in the learning process. ✅It promoted collaboration as students worked together in pairs. ✅It promoted creativity as the project options served as technology sandboxes for the students to play in. ✅Students created artifacts of learning and knowledge in their own unique way. ✅Students applied their knowledge as they needed to think across disciplines and not within the confines of a single subject. But I was only one of two attendees. There were three presenters, and only two in the audience. Why didn't more attend? Was it because it was ELA and Social Studies content appeared out of place at a technology and 21st century skills conference? Was it because it was the last session of the day? Was it because cross-curricular and interdisciplinary studies are old hat and the teachers attending didn't need to see the process? Or was it because it didn't involve anything with AI? _______________________________________________ 💡I want to see more interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary project based learning in education. If we really are going to raise students with 21st century skills, able to thrive in a 21st century world, their learning can't be relegated to silos of subject knowledge. It can't just be "this is technology time" or "this is math time" or "this is STEM" time. Learning doesn't occur in a vacuum. Subjects are naturally connected but educators artificially separate them into neat little boxes. Smash the boxes. Throw the knowledge into a learning recipe. Have a great Monday fam. #education #technology #21stcenturyskills #mondaythoughts

Last week, we hosted the 3rd Facilitron University at the beautiful Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla, California. We were excited to welcome and engage with our incredible community, sharing insights, best practices and common goals for facilities and districts from 15 states across the country. We thank everyone who joined and want to recognize and thank Travis Allen for his inspiring keynote kickoff to Facilitron University! Travis challenged us to rethink the purpose of education, asking the big question: "Why do we go to school?” His thought-provoking journey through the past, present, and future of the workforce left us reflecting on the importance of human skills in the age of AI and automation. Key Takeaways: - Human Skills Matter Most: As AI reshapes industries, critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence will define career readiness. - Beyond the Classroom: Schools must foster connection, collaboration, and problem-solving, not just academic achievement. - The Role of Technology: AI can empower teachers and students when used thoughtfully, but human connection remains irreplaceable. - Reimagining Education: It's time to shift our focus from standardized tests to preparing students for real-world challenges. Travis reminded us that education is about inspiring curiosity and building a future where every student feels capable of making a meaningful impact. Thank you, Travis, for helping us reimagine what’s possible! #EducationInnovation #HumanSkills #EdTech #AI #FutureOfWork #FacilitronUniversity #K12Leadership #EducationForTheFuture
