Do you agree with me? As I shared in Chapter 1, when I first started my business, I had just had my daughter, Florence. I figured I would play with my little girl, be a great mommy, have a couple of bookkeeping clients, do a few tax returns, and make half of what I used to make. In my business plan, I determined to charge much less than my competitors and super-serve my clients. Naturally, over time, more business would follow. I doubt I’m the only one who thought like that. What I realized the hard way is that you cannot both exist as the lowest-cost provider and offer the highest-quality service. Trying to be both, I worked endless hours. I often stayed up through the night to meet my endless commitments and I had nearly nothing to show for all of my efforts. As you already know, although strategically charging less than my competitors and undercutting my own prices brought me lots of clients, my margins were so low that I did not have enough revenue to hire quality help. My business couldn’t grow. I was the only one who would work for free, and because I was the sole employee, I was working myself to death. But, this is no longer my story. I developed my own checklist, came up with 10 things to check first, and started improving my business. Now I can't believe that I did not see it much earlier, that I could double my revenue just by tweaking and tuning a few things.
