In a recent visit to a client in Brazil, I had the opportunity to engage in great conversations about the importance of responsible AI practices in business and government. During our discussion, I referenced an article from MIT that sheds light on the use cases and warns about data bias in many legacy systems. End of democracy as we know? 2,400 years ago, the Greek philosopher Aristotle argued that logos (reasoned argumentation) is only one element of political rhetoric, matched in importance by ethos (trustworthiness) and pathos (emotional resonance). With AI driven social media, pathos has become datafied, and therefore weaponised.Neurotargeting, in its simplest form, is the strategic use of large datasets to craft and deliver a message intended to sideline the recipient’s focus on logos and ethos and appeal directly to the pathos at their emotional core. #genAI #freespeech #neurotargeting #socialmedia #segmentation

This year is the first generative AI US election. Our political economy is at risk as AI-generated videos, images, and even voices flood the internet—and the electorate. How are we supposed to know what’s real and what’s not? Modeled after the EU’s AI Act, #AB3211 in CA requires generative AI companies to embed data within the digital media they create. This data would include that the media was digitally created, when it was created, and who it was created by. Damn, it is wonderful to have data to back up what we know: Outstanding initiative from the Polarization Research Lab deploys an #AI language analysis tool to measure the public discourse from US Congress lawmakers and identify “conflict entrepreneurs” that issue the most personal attacks – from both sides of the aisle. The research raises a critical question: Which is more important – policing the behavior of politicians, or raising the quality and volume of issue-focused journalism? From the latest research report: “The media’s focus on insults and personal attacks instead of reporting on policy debates provides incentives for legislators to engage in conflict entrepreneurship, even if it doesn’t have a strong relationship with material outcomes like campaign support. This behavior allows legislators to build a national audience without investing in the effort required to advance in the legislative hierarchy in Congress or draft and promote legislation.” The full Polarization Research Lab report: https://lnkd.in/ebRs-DBx #disinformation #AI #misinformation #fakenews #mediadevelopment #internationaldevelopment #medialiteracy https://lnkd.in/eJ_D-yuA

The Age of AI and Political Gaslighting In this age of AI, gaslighting has become a central theme in everyday life, making it increasingly difficult to differentiate between what is real and what is AI-generated. Soon, AI-created realities will outpace the truth, becoming as natural and taken for granted as ice is to water. This phenomenon extends to politics, where gaslighting has long been part of the narrative. Mediocre candidates, backed by big business and military contractors, often run for office despite being third-rate in every measurable way. George Bush Jr. is a prime example of a mediocre candidate thrust into power by those behind the scenes, merely needing to read his lines and follow the script to secure victory. The Democrats have now made the same mistake, picking a third-rate candidate in Kamala Harris. She has risen through the political ranks without ever having to do much except please her backers. This strategy worked for local and statewide elections, but on the national stage, it has failed. She struggles to remember the talking points fed to her by handlers, often appearing misinformed and unprepared. You’d think that a former prosecutor with her track record would have had no trouble dismantling a 78-year-old felon and grifter like Trump, who is clearly showing signs of senility. Yet, she has failed miserably. Why? Because she’s never had to do more than look good for powerful men. Despite raising billions in campaign funds and having the full cooperation of the media, her flaws are glaring and frustrating. Instead of burying Trump politically, she has turned herself into a target of mockery and disdain. I’ve said before that Harris has serious mental issues, which I believe will become evident once she inevitably replaces Joe Biden. Her bizarre laughter and erratic behavior, which might be attributed to too much alcohol, raise serious questions. Her choice for Vice President is equally questionable, and as America watches this Harris waltz unfold, one must wonder: Why do the rich oligarchs think Americans are so gullible that they can’t tell when they’re being gaslighted by Wall Street’s chosen candidates? I still believe Harris will scrape through and win in November, but not because she’s deserving. The Democratic machine will do what it did for Kennedy in the early sixties—make dead people vote, stuff ballot boxes, and pull every dirty trick to ensure their third-rate candidate wins. The idea of another Trump presidency is so abhorrent to them that cheating will be seen as a patriotic duty to “save the Republic.” Harris cannot win on her own, so the party will have to resort to underhanded tactics to ensure victory. #AI #Politics #Gaslighting #KamalaHarris #Elections #AmericanPolitics #DemocraticParty #GeorgeBush #MediocreCandidates #Trump #VoterManipulation

🔍 Thrilled to announce my appointment as Senior Fellow with the Max Bell Foundation , where I'll be exploring a critical question: Can AI be harnessed as a force for democratic good while acknowledging its potential risks? We know AI can be weaponized to spread misinformation and undermine democratic institutions. However, through a $100,000 project grant, we're investigating if properly designed AI tools can also serve as trusted guides for voter decision-making. Our focus is developing systems that provide high-quality, accurate, and strictly non-partisan information to help citizens navigate electoral choices. At the The Democratic Engagement Exchange at TMU Engagement Exchange Toronto Metropolitan University, we've seen how voters struggle to access reliable information about candidates and issues. This project will rigorously test whether AI can help bridge this gap - with transparency and trust at its core. Key priorities: Developing safeguards against bias and misinformation Ensuring complete transparency about information sources Creating tools that empower voters while protecting democratic integrity Testing effectiveness across two election cycles This isn't about replacing human judgment, but rather exploring if AI can help citizens access and understand the information they need to make informed democratic choices. read more: https://lnkd.in/gfdUQ4dm Thank you Allan Northcott #DemocraticEngagement #AIforGood #DigitalDemocracy #ResponsibleAI #PublicPolicy #MaxBellFoundation
