The latest Morning Consult + Zoom ‘Global Collaboration in the Workplace’ report, unveiled at Zoom ANZ’s Media Day, revealed some surprising insights into the challenges Australian businesses are facing. One standout: 97% of Australian business leaders are spending time each day on "inefficient collaboration"—fixing misunderstandings and realigning teams. Even more striking is that 40% of those leaders spend over an hour a day on these tasks. These local findings highlight a clear opportunity for businesses to improve efficiency through better collaboration tools and smarter workflows. It’s exciting to see how innovations, particularly in AI, can help reclaim some of this lost time and drive real productivity gains. I would love to say this is surprising.. but it’s not. The biggest opportunity most businesses are missing in their goal for greater efficiency and in turn financial growth is this. And most of the time it’s the leaders fault (though unintentional). Many leaders see the notion of collaboration as “fluff” as opposed to the key to unlock maximum productivity. Collaboration is not about consensus and though similar in some ways they couldn’t be more different.
Too many info fields for a simple report where name & email will do - probs losing a lot of good leads
Too many recurring meetings that are simply to funnel messages and "manage.'" I've cancelled most of the weekly and fortnightly meetings as they had little to no value for either myself or others in the room. Very open to meetings, as long as they are for a specific reason and outcome that is listed in the meeting invite. If you do not have a set objective and potential outcome for a meeting.... do not attend.
Please stop using “tools” as an excuse for poor performance. Make people accountable for their work or lack of it.
I love these insights. Thanks for sharing. I think the tools are out there but they just aren't being used properly.
Imagine if they measured time spent looking at other windows whilst on a zoom call 😱🪦
It’s no surprise at all Bede. It’s been the elephant in the room for years in Construction. The inhibitors are deeply cultural.
Fixing misunderstandings and realigning teams - sounds like time for real conversations
And we all wonder why AI may just take our job….

3moJust as engines won’t work without friction, organisations can’t function without collaboration. But, like friction, too much collaboration is harmful. After all, collaboration creates dependencies. In my experience it’s better to build teams that are as self-sufficient as possible, with all the internal skills needed to create value. External collaborations should be as limited as possible, and managed through strong communication, close working relationships, and high trust (wherever possible). If business leaders are spending time each day “fixing misunderstandings and realigning teams”, they need to get out of the weeds and build a better organisational culture and design.
