I'm so happy that my team and I were able to truly put this year's theme for International Women's Day 2024 to full use: 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress'. We organized a training for financial professionals and Diversity and Inclusion practitioners on 'Inclusive Investments: Bridging the Financial Gender Gap'. I learned so much from ace finance gurus Khusro Mumtaz and Sabahat Bokhari, my main takeaways were: ♀ Pinkwashing is a pervasive practice in the banking industry. Rather than having truly inclusive products and schemes, existing products are simply re-branded as for 'women', such as pink credit cards and saving schemes with female sounding titles. For products that truly work for women, they need to be re-designed not just re-branded! 📲 'Branchless banking' is not just online - there are so many other ways to make banking more accessible but outside-the-box thinking and empathetic product design need to happen. 🚧 Without social inclusion, financial inclusion is not possible. We need to think about the systemic barriers holding women's financial inclusion back and work towards removing barriers through equitable measures and intelligent design. 💡 During the case-building activities where participants were given scenarios to build banking products for women’s differential needs and circumstances, the teams with women and women-only teams had the most innovative and creative financial instrument solutions.
