A few months ago, I had an interesting conversation with HR about bringing on an apprentice in the next round of recruitment —and it sparked some interesting questions from others in my non-work circle: “Why not a more ‘qualified’ graduate?” For me, in the procurement world, a degree isn’t a great measure of someone’s ability. While I have a bachelors and two master’s degrees plus an alphabet of qualifications behind my name so I know that academic knowledge has its place. In procurement, emotional intelligence, adaptability, creativity and hands-on problem-solving are far more valuable. Not everyone can attend university due to financial or personal barriers. Apprenticeships make procurement accessible to those who may not follow the traditional academic path. This diversity benefits our teams and, ultimately, the supply chains we manage. Diverse perspectives bring innovation, and they help us better serve our increasingly diverse customer base. Procurement needs to move past people “falling” into the profession; it’s a strategic, rewarding career path. Building a team that values practical intelligence, common sense, collaboration, and attention to detail will professionalise the field and open it up to a wider, talented pool. Choosing an apprentice is about finding team members who can excel through real-world experience and passion. Great procurement is accessible to all who bring dedication and practical skills to the table and I'm really looking forward to next year when we start building the role profile before going out to advert ahead of the next academic year. #procurement #apprenticeships #talentdevelopment #inclusivehiring #careergrowth

One of the best strategies is to build relationships with local technical schools and trade programs. By engaging with these institutions, you’ll not only help shape the next generation of technicians, but you’ll also position your shop as a go-to employer for new graduates entering the workforce. Here’s how to get started: 1. Offer Internships or Apprenticeships: Give students hands-on experience by offering internships or apprenticeships. This will help them gain real-world skills while giving you a chance to evaluate potential future hires. 2. Attend Career Fairs: Participate in local school or trade program career fairs. This is a great opportunity to connect with students who are eager to start their careers and put your shop on the radar as an employer of choice. 3. Provide Sponsorships or Scholarships: Consider offering sponsorships, scholarships, or equipment donations to local schools. This not only helps students with their education but also builds goodwill and long-term relationships with educational institutions. 4. Host Shop Tours or Workshops: Invite students from local programs to tour your shop or attend workshops where they can learn more about the industry and the opportunities within it. 🚆 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲! Congratulations to VEDANG K RANE, an RMIT School of Property, Construction and Project Management graduate, who has landed an exciting role at Alstom! Discover how a site visit opened the door to a rewarding career. His story shows the power of connections and taking advantage of RMIT's industry engagement opportunities. Check out his full journey below! --- During my final semester pursuing a Master of Project Management at RMIT University, I had the opportunity to attend a site visit at Alstom's West Melbourne facility. This experience turned out to be a pivotal moment in my career journey, leading directly to a graduate position at Alstom just two months later. The site visit led me to understand how maintenance of a rolling stock happens at the site. I also saw the turbo module of a rolling stock train and visually compared it to a turbo of a car, given my background as a mechanical graduate. Additionally, I observed safety features used by the facility, such as lock-in and lock-out procedures. The opportunity arose when I engaged with Alstom professionals during the visit. Our conversations delved deeply into the industry and project management perspectives. Their openness and willingness to share their experiences were invaluable. RMIT provided numerous resources that greatly supported my career journey. I actively participated in career fairs, regularly checked the job boards and engaged in online internships through platforms like Forage. The career fairs and site visits at RMIT gave me platforms to directly interact with industry professionals, making it easier to build genuine connections and have meaningful conversations that led to opportunities like the one at Alstom. Connecting with professionals through these activities were crucial in expanding my knowledge and gaining practical experience. For any international student aiming to achieve their career goals, I advise making genuine connections with industry professionals. These connections, fostered through university-provided platforms such as job fairs and site visits, are invaluable. At RMIT, students have multiple opportunities to meet industry experts, and it is crucial to make the most of these chances. Post-graduation, these platforms become less accessible, so leveraging them while still a student is essential. In conclusion, the site visit to Alstom was not only an eye-opener but also a career-defining experience that set me on the path to my current role. Big thanks to Yoshiko Y., RMIT’s Industry Experience Coordinator, and Suzie Moore, HR at Alstom, both instrumental in organising the visit. -- Do you have employment opportunities for RMIT students?
