Really pleased to see the launch of BDC Capital (Canada)'s DEI and ESG report. This was a massive undertaking by GPs, companies, and the BDC Capital team to collect this data and analyse the progress being made in the industry. Some findings: 🚀 Diverse representation continues to increase since 2021, with the percentage of General Partners (GPs) where women make up at least half of employees increasing by 16 percentage points and visible minorities by 9 percentage points. ❗ Gender diversity remains a gap at the GP ownership and investment committee levels, with 55% of GPs entirely male-owned and 21% of investment committees composed exclusively of men 🌲 GPs are improving on the integration of the social and governance aspects of ESG, but we are observing a persistently low adoption of climate-related measures like reducing air travel or measuring emissions and setting carbon neutral goals. At the risk of igniting a firestorm, this ESG/DEI report from BDC raises several issues, including: 1- BDC's VC operations have bled over $1 b. in write downs over the past 2 fiscal years at the same time as it has loudly proclaimed its fealty to DEI and ESG. So, financial results seem untethered from these value commitments; 2- the report smacks of 'peak woke' thinking and as such is out of tune with the pushback against this value system that erupted on Nov. 5 with the US elections. The current federal government, BDC's sole shareholder, has pushed its progressive agenda across multiple policy and issue areas from foreign aid to defense and venture capital. Needless to say, incumbent governments are at great electoral risk today and we should be prepared to see a pullback from BDC's fulsome DEI and ESG loyalty after the next election when an incoming government of another political persuasion expresses different priorities for its crown corporations including BDC,EDC and FCC; 3- a new government, more attuned to developments in Washington, won't appreciate one of its arms making the sort of statement in the report to the effect that, " despite the overall trend toward ESG disclosure ...skeptics remain in the US and elsewhere". Here, 'elsewhere' looks like an afterthought. Nor will it be enamored of," LP's should invest in managers with strong DEI and ESG values and performance." .There's the gatekeeper telling the private sector what to do.
