Two highly experienced military professionals have joined ASKA’s Defense Strategy Advisory board. Lt Gen (ret) Andy Croft, United States Air Force and Eric Edwards, former Director for the Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC). Andrew and Eric served at senior military positions prior to taking retirement and are contributing their expertise to help ASKA identify and act on new defense-related opportunities and expand the company’s leadership role in multimodal development. During Andrew Croft’s distinguished military career, he served in roles that tapped his strength as a leader and his innate ability as a negotiator to create collaborative partnerships. Andrew excelled in high-level roles that leveraged his skills in strategy, planning, negotiation, acquisition and requirements. In senior leadership positions, he engaged with government, interagency, and embassies to build and improve key partnerships. In Andrew’s last role as Military Deputy Commander, he was responsible for DoD security and defense cooperation. As a highly experienced fighter pilot, Andrew is well-versed in a wide array of combat aircraft and weapons systems. Eric Edwards is a scientific and engineering expert on research and development for aviation. In his 31-year career as a Department of the Army civilian, he served in director-level roles and achieved top ranking as a Tier 2 member of the Senior Executive Service and was decorated for numerous Civilian Service Awards. Eric was the Director of the Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC), which had an integral role in the Army’s Future Vertical Lift initiative to design and develop the next generation of vertical lift aircraft. He exercised direct line authority over all activities to assure adequacy of budgeting, planning, conduct, and effectiveness of projects and a balanced and competent technical capability. Today Eric also works with Advanced Technology, Incorporated (ATI) as the Executive Director for the Aviation and Missile Technology Consortium (AMTC). ASKA is well-positioned for strategic growth with an advisory board that consists of two sets of experts; technology and academic advisors who are focused on our existing private sector business, and the recently formed group of advisors with military experience to support our expanded focus on the defense sector. ASKA™ A5 is the world’s first electric-hybrid roadable VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft. Multimodal vehicles with surface and air capabilities will expand mobility options, reduce risk, lower transportation costs, minimize environmental impact, and improve overall logistics and supply chain effectiveness and resilience. We deeply value Andrew and Eric’s expertise and insight, and are grateful for the opportunity to work together. Welcome Andy and Eric! #defense #technology #military #aviation #startups #innovation #dod #vtol

2024 was a big year for Acquisitions with significant efforts to enhance capabilities and capacity, focusing on agility, resilience, and collaboration to address global security challenges. Key efforts include expanding (and focusing) the defense industrial base, accelerating weapon system deliveries, and establishing the Regional Sustainment Framework (RSF) to improve maintenance and supply chains in contested environments. The first National Defense Industrial Strategy (NDIS) also a tremendous strides to strengthen supply chains, workforce readiness, and flexible acquisition processes. Key Highlights: • Joint Production Accelerator Cell (JPAC): Conducted analyses to alleviate bottlenecks in critical weapon systems, supporting accelerated deliveries of systems like the Patriot air defense. • Regional Sustainment Framework (RSF): Developed a distributed maintenance, repair, and overhaul network positioned closer to operational needs, reducing logistical burdens and equipment downtime. • National Defense Industrial Strategy (NDIS): Released to guide the development of a robust defense industrial ecosystem, addressing challenges such as inadequate domestic production and supply chain risks. • Defense Production Act Investments: Awarded over $670 million in new grants to expand domestic manufacturing capacity and diversify the supply base. • Innovation Capability and Modernization (ICAM) Projects: Invested more than $1.6 billion across 160 projects to strengthen sectors like shipbuilding, critical minerals, and microelectronics. • Competitive Advantage Pathfinders (CAPs): Employed modular open systems approaches and cross-service integration to streamline development and fielding of capabilities. • Cross-Service Capability Development: Facilitated collaboration between services, such as the Navy and Air Force, to develop shared capabilities like the Pegasus electronic attack module. These initiatives reflect the DoD’s commitment to modernizing acquisition and sustainment processes to effectively respond to current and future defense challenges…most notably in and for Space.

The U.S. Department of Defenses' accelerating demand for Operations and Maintenance components signals a growing opportunity for companies performing sustainment activities in the defense industrial base. While the U.S. Department of Defense's budget is only projected to increase by 2%, the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) budget looks to increase by ~10% during the same period. To seize this opportunity, defense contractors must proactively invest in supply chain and logistics operations to ensure availability of the right workforce, systems, supporting tools, and parts. My colleagues Rodion Kaplounov, Ben Brooks, Olivia A. White, and Brian Jones outline how defense contractors should secure these key elements to maximize the most of the coming windfall. #defense #aerospace #PBL
