Innovation drives us forward, as businesses and as a nation. Investment in innovation through R&D is vital to our sovereign capability, skills, and future knowledge. However, Australia’s R&D spending declined to just 1.68% of GDP in 2021, after a peak of 2.24% in 2008. What factors have contributed to the drop in R&D spending - particularly over the past decade - and how can we achieve the Federal Government’s target of 3% of GDP? Supported by BDO, the AuManufacturing news and media series - ‘Towards 3% R&D - Turbocharging Australia’s Innovation Effort’ explores these questions and more through contributions from thought leaders and industry experts. Keep up with the series on AuManufacturing’s website and stay tuned for the e-book and webinar to follow. #manufacturing #innovation #australianmanufacturing #researchanddevelopment

In this post I am looking at two recent WIPO reports on Innovation Trends and will quickly discuss their implications, especially for SMEs. ➡ The first report, "Global Trends in Innovation Patterns: A Complexity Approach," paints a curious picture of the global innovation landscape. It uses data on scientific publications, patents, and international trade to analyze the capabilities of different countries. The report highlights that innovative activities are concentrated in a handful of high-income countries (surprise-surprise!). Interestingly, scientific publishing and patenting are more concentrated than exports, meaning fewer countries in fact dominate these areas. This concentration poses a challenge for SMEs in Europe, as they face stiff competition from these innovation powerhouses. ↪ So, the big question is: how can European SMEs thrive in this environment? ➡ The second report, "Can we map innovation capabilities?" provides some clues to this. It proposes a method to measure innovation capabilities across science, technology, and production, using the same data sources as the first report. This method acknowledges that both relative and absolute specialization are important. A country might not be a global leader in a field, but if it strategically allocates resources and excels relative to its peers, it can still build valuable capabilities. That's a crucial point for European SMEs. They may not have the resources to compete head-to-head with large corporations in every field. But by focusing on niche areas where they can build a comparative advantage, they can still innovate and succeed. This report also emphasizes the importance of "relatedness" in innovation. This means building upon existing capabilities to develop new ones in adjacent fields. It's like climbing a technology ladder, step by step. For example, Singapore initially specialized in capabilities with lower complexity. Over time, they strategically developed related capabilities of higher complexity, eventually becoming a leading innovator in more sophisticated fields. This "related diversification" strategy can likewise be a game-changer for European SMEs, where they can leverage their existing strengths and knowledge to gradually move into more complex, high-value fields. I will include the links to both reports in the comment section below. #innovation #ipstrategy #ipandsmes #wiporeports
