I haven't been very active on LinkedIn these past weeks. Since mid-October, things went wrong for one of my favorite "cat" tools (she's the beauty you see on the picture below). An osteosarcoma (a bone cancer) started growing at a fast pace on her right hind paw. At the end, the vet compared its size to a small grapefruit. Surgery to remove it twice was unsuccessful. It was agressive and would come back in a matter of weeks. At the end of October, an abscess formed on the tumor. It broke out on Halloween night. It was a horror night. Under the gaping wound, pus, organic tissues and the smell of necrosis. 🤢 The only option to get rid of the osteosarcoma for good was amputation. The operation was made on Thursday and the recovery is still on. I now call her my paralympic girl. 🙂 Why am I telling you this story? Because I think we should take a leaf out of the cat's book in our personal and professional lives. 💪 They are persistent. 💪 They adapt to any situation. 💪 They don't give a damn about being different. 💪 They enjoy life despite hardship. And the icing on the cake? 🦷✨ A Personal Reflection on Today’s Case ✨🦷 Today, I treated a non-English-speaking patient who needed detailed aftercare instructions. 💬 After completing her treatment, I used Dental Note Templates GPT to automate her aftercare notes. But I wanted to go a step further. Knowing she might feel more confident with information in her preferred language, I asked the system for a translation to Albanian. 🌍 Here’s a snippet of what she received: 💡 English: "Maintain excellent oral hygiene, including brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and using interdental cleaning aids such as floss or TePe brushes. Contact the practice if you experience significant pain, swelling, or sensitivity that does not subside." 💡 Albanian: "Ruani një higjienë të shkëlqyer orale, duke larë dhëmbët dy herë në ditë me pastë dhëmbësh me fluor dhe duke përdorur mjete pastrimi ndërdhëmbësh si fijet ose furçat TePe. Message Clarifier: A Crucial Role in Interpretation As interpreters, one of our key responsibilities is to intervene when there’s a risk of miscommunication. In these situations, we shift from first-person to third-person to clarify the message effectively. Imagine you ask a patient, “Do you have cardiomyopathy?” and they’re unsure of what it means. How do you handle it? As a message clarifier, it’s our job to spot potential misunderstandings and ensure clear communication between all parties. When confusion arises, here’s what to do: 1. Pause the conversation to address the issue. 2. Inform both parties that there’s a misunderstanding, identifying the unclear word or concept. 3. Clarify the term or assist in simplifying the message. 4. Support speakers in explaining complex concepts clearly. Guidelines for Effective Clarification: - Don’t assume—ask if clarification is needed. - Let the speaker provide additional details; step in only if necessary. Our goal is to facilitate clear communication without unnecessary interruptions. Only intervene when it’s clear that communication is hindered and clarification is truly needed.
