💻 As a tech founder, there’s often pressure to scale quickly, and one of the first suggestions you’ll hear is to hire a Sales Development Representative (SDR). The idea seems simple: bring in someone to focus on sales while you concentrate on building the product. But here’s the reality: hiring an SDR too early can be risky, costly, and ultimately less effective than taking on the sales role yourself—at least initially. Here’s why founders are often the best people to lead early sales efforts. 1️⃣ No one knows the product like you 2️⃣ You are fully invested in it's success 3️⃣ Early Sales Conversations Are a Goldmine for Learning 4️⃣ Hiring an SDR Too Early Is Costly and Risky 5️⃣ Founders Need to Lead From the Top. Its how you learn about the market you are in and set future direction. 6️⃣ Build repeatable and scalable sales process through learning by doing. 🏇 Get on the Horse and Start Riding Avoiding sales as a founder is understandable; it can be intimidating, time-consuming, and uncomfortable. But it’s also one of the most valuable things you can do for your business. By embracing sales in the early stages, you’re setting yourself up for long-term success. You’ll build credibility, learn from your market, and develop a scalable sales strategy that will eventually make hiring an SDR a smart, strategic decision. #sales #saas #saassales

How to survive your first 30 days as an SDR. 1: Outwork everyone At the start of your SDR journey, you have to outwork your lack of knowledge and experience. That means doing 25% more than any of your peers. 25% more activity 25% more intention in your outreach 25% more time to reflect and improve your game 2: Outlearn everyone Find the 3 most successful SDRs in your company and figure out what makes them win. Spend at least an hour everyday shadowing them / listening to their calls. Ask them great questions about their mindset, sales process, and approach. Then, ask about those who didn’t make it.. what could they have done differently? Listen. Take Notes. Learn. Apply. 3: Build alliances Start forging relationships with the key people there to support you. For ex. Your leader, AEs, Marketing, Sales Enablement, Operations You’ll work with them often.. so make sure they know who you are and to leave a great first impression! They can also become your biggest advocates once you’re up for a promotion. 4: Adapt.. quickly If a new strategy isn’t yielding results, make the adjustment now. Don’t procrastinate! There's a 99% chance you’ll need to change your approach before finally landing on what works for you.. so stay curious and open to trying new methods. The SDR role is constantly evolving. 5 things I wish I knew before becoming an AE. (coming from an SDR experience) Transitioning to an AE is stepping into an entirely different game. Here are 5 things I wish I knew before I made the leap: 1. Pipeline is your oxygen. Your survival depends on closing deals. That means building and maintaining a healthy pipeline is non-negotiable. 2. Discovery skills make or break you. The SDR playbook won’t teach you deep discovery. Mastering the right questions, uncovering pain points, and aligning them to your solution is essential. Find a mentor to guide you. 3. Time management wasn't a buzzword anymore. Juggling prospecting, SDR management, calls, forecasting, approvals, follow-ups, etc. It's a jungle. Learn to prioritize revenue-driving activities and avoid the trap of “busy work.” 4. Rejection hits harder, but so do wins. Rejections feel personal because deals you’ve spent weeks on can slip away. But when you close, the payoff is sweet. 5. Relationships > transactions. Trust, trust, trust. Take time to build real relationships with your prospects. A single strong relationship can open doors to multiple deals. But here’s the hard truth: overthinking can be the silent killer of your productivity and confidence. Why Overthinking is a Problem: 1. Wastes Time: Spending too much time crafting the perfect message means less time reaching out to prospects. 2. Builds Anxiety: Overanalyzing every detail can lead to self-doubt and hesitation. 3. Stalls Progress: You learn more from doing than from endlessly planning. Tips to Overcome Overthinking: 1. Set Time Limits: Give yourself a set amount of time for each task. For example, spend no more than 10 minutes drafting an email. 2. Embrace Imperfection: Understand that not every outreach will be perfect, and that’s okay. Progress is better than perfection. 3. Seek Feedback: Regularly ask for feedback from your peers or mentors. This helps you improve without second-guessing yourself constantly. 4. Focus on Volume: Early in your career, the quantity of outreach is often more important than the quality. As you gain experience, your quality will naturally improve.
