French multinational energy company TotalEnergies is one of the world's six or so supermajor oil companies, which are often colloquially referred to as Big Oil. Now, the company says it has come up with a way to reduce the amount of methane that is released into our atmosphere — by using drones, TotalEnergies itself reported. Methane is a gas that has heat-trapping capabilities up to 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in the short term. It is produced in large quantities by animal husbandry, particularly by cows. It is also used as an energy source, usually being referred to in that context as "natural gas." TotalEnergies, the company says, halved its own methane pollution between 2010 and 2020. Its goal is to achieve net-zero methane pollution by 2030. In order to accomplish that goal, it worked with the French National Centre for Scientific Research and the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne to develop "a drone-mounted ultralight CO2 and CH4 sensor for ensuring access to hard-to-reach emission points while delivering readings with the highest precision." #emissions #emissiontech #Oil #Energy #Renewables

The strategy has been presented by Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica, introduced by the Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and detailed by Director Federico Boschi This is an important milestone 🎯 for Italy to build up the hydrogen sector ❗ A roundtable with Alberto Dossi #H2IT, Piero Ercoli #SNAM, Aurelio Regina #CONFINDUSTRIA and Massimo Ricci #ARERA, The plan is concrete, giving a strong direction to identify the Demand of Hydrogen, to create a Sustainable Offer (#competitivecosts, #renewablehydrogen and #lowcarbonhydrogen, #energysecurity, #decarbonisationtargets), to plan for enabling infrastructures (#hydrogenbackbone, #ports), to define key strategic support actions, to identify the resources 💶 to implement and run the overall strategy. ✈️ The Future of Aviation: The Shift Towards Hydrogen✈️ As the aviation industry anticipates significant growth, the focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), biofuels, and power-to-liquid fuels is strong. Yet, leading voices in the sector argue we must pivot more attention towards hydrogen, particularly for short-haul flights. 🛫 Jenny Kavanagh from Cranfield Aerospace Solutions highlights, "There is no silver bullet to decarbonize aviation, but hydrogen is an essential part of the mix." With its three times greater energy density per kilogram than kerosene, hydrogen offers a transformative potential for aviation efficiency. Solange Baena-Zambrana, UK lead on the Airbus Aviation Environmental Roadmap, adds, "Our future aircraft concepts are progressing well, and we're exploring different technologies to ensure the feasibility of hydrogen use in aviation. By 2025, we aim to decide which aircraft concepts will advance, marking a significant step towards integrating hydrogen by 2035." Challenges remain, from infrastructure needs to the handling of cryogenic liquids, but the industry's commitment to overcoming these hurdles is clear. Jessica Kennedy of Rolls-Royce notes, "The integration of #hydrogen technologies in aircraft design is progressing, with potential entry into commercial service targeted for 2035." 🌍 With the aviation sector responsible for emissions at altitude, affecting global warming differently than ground-level sources, innovations like contrail management and more efficient flight paths are also vital. As the industry moves forward, aligning strategies, scaling up hydrogen production, and addressing policy frameworks are crucial. Jane Ashton of easyJet emphasises the collective effort, "We've partnered with the Hydrogen in Aviation to ensure that hydrogen-derived fuels are supported by robust policies." The journey to a cleaner aviation future is complex but achievable with hydrogen leading the way.
