This is a great read from Muriel Clauson Closs, PhD and Anthill on why and how leaders need to communicate with frontline workers.
At Anthill, we talk to thousands of workers and learn how they are feeling about their jobs. One consistent theme - poor communication from leaders is stressful. When workers receive spotty communication, or no communication at all, they fill in the gaps with assumptions or rumors that are often stressful. I did research on this topic back in my days as a graduate student and I've seen this play out in so many real life examples of workplaces using Anthill. The distribution center employees who were never told what that new equipment was for and people assumed it could be there to automate their jobs away. A departure of a team leader on an industrial services team that went unaddressed and created a rumor mill around what happened. And a policy change at a call center shared without any human touch making employees question why the change was happening. When we don't communicate well with our frontline we create stress for workers - stress that is distracting and counterproductive. How do we communicate better with workers and alleviate this stress?
