Disruption. Equity. Inclusion. 💪 Just before half term, Chatsworth Schools held our latest DEI day at Great Tew hosted by our Head of DEI, Joanna Leach in front of another packed house 🙌🏻 Chatsworth Schools was delighted to welcome DEI expert Penny Rabiger, PhD candidate with the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality (CRED) at Leeds Beckett University, a coach on the Anti-Racist School Award (All Chatsworth Schools are working towards it) and content developer for CRED professional learning programmes. There was a thorough examination of some core elements of DEI and specifically anti-racism with some in-depth activities and reflections 👌🏻: 🔎 An overview of The Public Sector Equality Duty for Schools 🔎 Why race in particular & intersections with the other 8 characteristics 🔎 What is race? What is racism? 🔎 What might anti-racism look like? 🔎 Where does racism dwell - the six areas of the Anti-Racism School Award 🔎 Examples of ways of tackling racism and embedding anti-racist practice, and gathering evidence for the award One of the biggest takeaways was that if leaders, schools and school groups are serious about 'disrupting' education, it is impossible to achieve genuine disruption without ensuring every member of your community feels safe, accepted and that they belong 💜 As a global schools family we are totally committed to disrupting the norm in every aspect of education for the benefit of every child and staff member. We have an international platform to disrupt the way school groups approach DEI and we fully intend to be positive DEI disrupters in education through deliberate actions and the evolution of our bespoke Chatsworth Schools DEI Charter 🙌🏾 They are all our children. So grateful to Trustee Maedith Radelin for bravely confronting hate, harassment and racism head-on. The Waterloo Region District School Board is fortunate to have her leadership. It's not enough to simply recognize how racism and harm play out, we must also take courageous steps to face it. Recently, a negative narrative has emerged regarding the work of equity and inclusion. Misinformation has been used to sow doubt and concern. However, as Trustee Radlein notes, policies that address diversity, equity, and inclusion are necessary if we want to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. Let's recognize that the work about equity, and inclusion is based on making schools safer for all children, and reject the idea that they are divisive. Instead, let's embrace the research and knowledge that informs them. Thank you again, Trustee Radelin, for your leadership. Creating Change, One School at a Time Last Friday, our Director and Founder, Lara Sengupta, had the honour of speaking at the Warrington Association of School and College Leaders residential training day. The session, “Challenging Unconscious Racism in Schools”, focused on empowering educators to: ✅ Understand how to become actively anti-racist educators ✅ Recognise and address unconscious biases ✅ Foster a zero-tolerance culture for racism and racial bias, using a trauma-informed approach It was inspiring to connect with so many passionate headteachers and education leaders dedicated to creating truly equitable environments for their pupils. At Every Future Foundation, we believe that achieving racial equity and racial justice starts with education. "My mum says that it's people like you that are taking our jobs".... 🤦🏿♀️ 🤦🏿♀️ 🤦🏿♀️ 🤦🏿♀️ 🤦🏿♀️ That is a REAL quote, from a young person in one of the schools that I support. The young person is not a secondary aged pupil but a primary school pupil. Yep. 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 This is not the first time that I have been aware of this type of viewpoint being expressed, and it won't be the last. Just because the comment is not accompanied by some physical altercation to highlight their view, doesn't lessen its impact. This is the use of derogatory and non-inclusive language in schools, in the UK, today. School leaders - do you recognise that this statement and similar could be the beginning of something potentially highly problematic? As schools begin their half term break or are returning back after half term, it's worth reflecting on the temperature check of YOUR school. 🤨 Do you know how your parents think about diversity, equity and inclusion? 🤨 Have you given your parents an opportunity to share their thoughts about the diversity, equity and inclusion work that you are doing? 🤨 When are your younger pupils able to speak out their understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion? If you're not sure on any of these points, and you want to ensure that your school doesn't unwittingly enable pupils to be biased, bigoted and not able to hear other viewpoints - get in touch. Remember, we have just lived through a summer where young people as young as 12 were involved in the race riots and a MP's wife has gone to jail for their involvement.
