Congratulations. You’ve (NEARLY) Done it. You’ve “Stayed Alive ’Til 25” 2024 has been a challenging year for the UK film & TV industry, with strikes in Hollywood creating production delays, rising costs squeezing budgets, and global economic uncertainty impacting investment decisions. I’m not sure when I first heard the oft repeated phrase “Stay Alive Until 25” – but it was probably about the middle of the year. It’s a remarkably resilient industry – with people who are used to weathering tough times – but it’s taken a hell of a battering over the last few years. A lot of the smaller production companies – and all of the independent small companies and freelancers that work to support the film & tv industry – from make-up artists to carpenters, IT support to editors, agents to actors – have been hanging on by their fingernails. But ’25 is nearly upon us – and the future’s looking pretty good. Building on the UK’s world-leading expertise we have major infrastructure expansions transforming our production landscape. The incredible expansion at Shepperton Studios is virtually complete – revolutionizing UK production capacity, while other projects such as the state-of-the-art developments at Shinfield near Reading and Medina Studios on The Isle of Wight add to the rich mix of production facilities available – reinforcing the UK’s position as a global filmmaking hub. Major streaming platforms are doubling down on British content, with Netflix, Amazon, and Apple TV+ all expanding their production footprint across the nation. These purpose-built facilities are attracting tentpole productions and creating thousands of new jobs in the creative sector. Our world-class crews, competitive tax incentives, and rich storytelling heritage continue to make the UK an irresistible destination for global productions. From high-end TV dramas to cutting-edge VFX work, British talent is in high demand. The numbers tell an exciting story: planned investment in UK studio space exceeds £1 Billion, while training initiatives are building a skilled workforce ready to meet growing industry needs. This isn't just about London and the South East – regional production hubs in Manchester, Leeds, Hull and Glasgow already up and running, or in development. As we head in to the New Year, the UK is positioned to strengthen its role as a global content powerhouse. The creative industries remain one of our greatest exports, and the future looks bright. Let’s make the most of it! #UKFilm #TVProduction #MediaIndustry #CreativeIndustries #BritishFilm #ContentCreation #FilmIndustry #ProductionUK #SheppertonStudios #UKStudios

HNY. 2025 will see a record high # of Film/TV productions since the pandemic. So why aren't there any Production jobs in Hollywood? Because Hollywood production has shifted to 3 countries that have become hubs where all the jobs are 1. Spain 2. S. Korea 3. UK Hollywood IS NOT DEAD. The Box Office is hitting same high as last year and Streamers have hit record high usage and profitability. But production jobs in Hollywood have disappeared, and that’s because Hollywood discovered 4 game changers: 1. Production crews are as good or better in Spain, S. Korea & UK 2. Global shows from those countries are massive hits in the US and globally 3. It’s a lot cheaper to make movies and shows in those countries because they lack unions like those in the US. For example: 🦑 Squid Games was made in S. Korea and was Netflix's #1 biggest global hit series ever. And it cost 50%-75% less than Movies/TV made in the U.S. 💰 Money Heist was made in Spain and was one of Netflix's top 10 biggest global hits ever. And it too cost 50%-75% less than Movies/TV made in the U.S. 🎬 Plus dozens of other hit Movies/TV were made in the UK for 25% - 50% less than in the US 4. Vertical integration where Studios and Streamers own the physical Production Studios lowers the costs. Why pay a 3rd party physical production studio when you can pay yourself and control the workflow as a turnkey solution. For example: Netflix just bought/built new studios in New Mexico and New Jersey Amazon bought the Culver Studios in LA. So that’s left… Hollywood and Independent Production studios in LA, Canada & Georgia empty and struggling, while Spain, S Korea and the UK's are BOOMING Is this outsourcing jobs? Not exactly, because the productions abroad are most often (not always) localized content. Money Heist is in Spanish and takes place in Spain. Squid Games is in Korean and takes place in Korea. Its just that now for the 1st time in history, foreign shows are global hits. Besides, Hollywood hasn't been a major hub for decades because of California's lack of tax incentives One of the only reasons productions have still been done in California is because of major talent that insisted on shooting in California where they lived However, the pandemic triggered a ton of stars to flee California, leaving a void in Hollywood production. HOLLYWOOD 2.0 Is it the end of an era? Hollywood is in full crisis as crews of film and TV workers leave Los Angeles because of rising unemployment and high costs of living. “Everyone is in “panic mode”, a Los Angeles Times article alerts. Pursuing the dream in Hollywood has become way too expensive and uncertain. Add that to the A.I. fear factor that looms over the entertainment industry. As a result, many people are migrating to more affordable places and looking to reinvent themselves. The streaming era made Los Angeles blossom by the end of the 2010s with more productions than ever. The city saw a migration of talents and crew members relocating for work. In 2016, entertainment employment peaked, and it resisted the pandemic setback until mid-2022, according to Deadline. In the past two years, the numbers fell by 26%. And this includes “a good 20% of the VP-and-above executive workforce”. What happened was a combination of the after-pandemic effect, driven by inflation, that led to streamers and studios cutting back their productions. On top of it all, the unforgettable six months of strikes led to around 180 thousand jobs cut. As a result, Los Angeles has also lost 8.7% of location filming in the first quarter of this year, when compared to 2023. So, where is the entertainment industry relocating to? Las Vegas has already swept AFM, the biggest US film market that took place in Los Angeles for the past 43 years. But that is not all: Nevada is also building soundstages. Summerlin Production Studios Project, a collaboration between Sony Picture Entertainment and Hughes Holdings, is raising a 700-million-dollar facility. According to Variety, actor Mark Wahlberg is pushing to pass a tax credit law worth $190 million per year to bring more productions to the state. Not everything is going to Nevada, though. Netflix just inaugurated 108 acres of soundstages, mills, offices and backlots in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The company has already hired more than 4,000 cast and crew members for productions in the state. We know that Hollywood is much more than a physical location – it is a place where dreams come true. But if you need a hands-on team in Los Angeles, we are here to represent and help you!

From Screen Daily: European production and distribution group Federation Studios, which owns more than 30 labels including the UK’s Vertigo Films and Italy’s Fabula Pictures, has formally appointed advisors to explore investment or a sale, according to a report in Screen’s sister title Broadcast. The Paris-based company has engaged Morgan Stanley to assess its options, with a price tag of around €500m (£417m) believed to have been attached. Federation employs around 280 staff across Europe and the US, producing and distributing across genres including drama, factual, kids & family, documentaries and #film. Numerous companies have been mooted as potential suitors including All3Media, Peter Chernin’s The North Road Company and ITV Studios (ITVS). Federation founder and chief executive Pascal Breton retains a majority stake in the group and runs it with Lionel Uzan and Marco Chimenz, who left ITVS-owned Cattleya Srl last year to become group co-managing director. The move comes almost four years since private equity outfit Montefiore Investment invested around €50m (£42m) in the company back in 2021, enabling Federation to accelerate its growth following its formation by Breton in 2014. The group’s labels include a raft of leading European producers, including Vertigo, whose film credits include Bronson and Monsters, fellow British outfit Federation Stories – which is behind forthcoming UKTV drama I, Jack Wright – and Fabula, which recently produced Brigands for Netflix. Federation also houses more than a dozen French firms including Oscar-winner Bonne Pioche (March Of The Penguins), Bardot producer Federation Studios France and kids & family firm COTTONWOOD MEDIA. It is also the owner of three US labels including Picture Perfect Federation, launched in partnership with ex-Lionsgate boss Patrick Wachsberger, as well as Federation Spain and Drama Team in Tel Aviv. News of Morgan Stanley’s appointment, which comes almost a year since reports first surfaced that Federation was exploring investment or a sale, is being closely watched by industry insiders as the M&A market hots up across #Europe. Earlier this week news emerged that Slow Horses and The King’s Speech producer See-Saw Films is also exploring investment or a sale, while Reuters reported last week that RTL Group is exploring a potential merger for its production and distribution giant Fremantle. The flurry of activity follows a MIP Markets - MIPCOM, MIPJUNIOR, MIP CANCUN & MIP LONDON at which the likelihood of further consolidation was voiced by numerous execs, with private equity-backed groups driving much of the demand on the buying side, sources said.

Then Why Are You Leaving? “If you love working in TV so much, why aren’t you going after more production work?” The simple answer is that I am. I haven’t closed that door by any means. But the TV & Film industry has taken a huge hit for various reasons - the large majority of which are outside of our control as workers - and jobs are scarce. Without turning this into a post about the problems in the world of TV & Film production, I’ll just throw this out there: groups in charge of tracking these metrics list TV production somewhere around 20-30% of what it has been in recent years. Not great. Outside of the graphs and pie charts, I can see real-life proof of the downturn in my personal work circles. It’s easier to count my associates who are working than those who are out of work. That's very rare given the caliber of these creatives. “Survive ’til ’25” has been the mantra for a while now, but could it be “we’ll fix in ’26.”? That’s quite a few empty boxes on the calendar. This isn’t the first time I’ve had to weather downturns in the industry and I’m no stranger to the fickle and unpredictable nature of the TV industry. Most of us aren’t. I actually love the creative agility required to thrive in this industry. So please don’t misconstrue those leaving the industry as quitters. Part of being a great asset to any team is the ability to see realities for what they are and adjust accordingly. And when well over half of the jobs are gone and/or are being done outside the US, one has to adapt and put that agility to work. I truly cannot wait to face these new challenges in storytelling. What metrics and sources do you rely on to “read the tea leaves” ? What skills do you think translate outside of your current industry? #producer #projectmanager #creativeprojectmanager #video #contentcreation #jobseeker

🎬 Navigating the Hollywood Studio Slowdown: A Time for Reflection and Hope The Hollywood studio slowdown has undeniably impacted our industry, from delayed productions to shifts in content delivery. As challenging as this period has been for creatives, technicians, and all those behind the scenes, it also offers a unique opportunity for reflection and reinvention. The slowdown has highlighted the importance of adaptability, creativity, and resilience. It has given us time to rethink how stories are told, how content is distributed, and how the industry can evolve to meet the demands of a changing world. But more than anything, it has shown us the enduring power of storytelling. Even in the face of uncertainty, the desire to create, connect, and inspire remains as strong as ever. As we look to the future, I am hopeful. Hopeful that this pause will lead to new and diverse voices emerging, innovative ways of working together, and a renewed commitment to the art and craft of filmmaking. Hollywood has always been a place of dreams, and even in times of slowdown, those dreams continue to drive us forward. Here’s to a future where the stories we tell are more inclusive, more powerful, and more impactful than ever before. 🌟 #Hollywood #FilmIndustry #Creativity #Resilience #Storytelling #HopefulFuture #Film #Television

💰📺 Global Films+TV Productions: 9% Rise in July 2024 vs. June. Vitrina A.I. tracks Film and TV Productions worldwide, on a daily basis. We track projects, the companies associated as well as the key decision-makers driving those scripted-unscripted projects across TV-series, Feature Films, Animation, Documentaries and Adaptations. This helps our members in tracking and connecting with the right partners within the media supply-chain. JULY 2024: New production green-lighting, financing and commissioning saw a 9% increase in transaction volumes last month. Key trends include: 💲 Mid-term correction with less focus on high-budget projects and more on mid and smaller-budget productions. 🏆 Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios and Netflix, at the global level and a series of regional players contributed to the July productions increase. 💥 Lower-risk strategies being adopted, such as smaller budgets, time-tested stories, and strategic partnerships. 🌏 Cross-border collaborations becoming essential. 🤨 Cautious (and increasingly skeptical) production financing decision-makers need strong IP and development projects. 🎩 Fierce competition and increased incentives from rival governments and film commissions making it challenging for Hollywood to compete. 📈 Global production trends show APAC and EMEA regions growing from July to June (48% and 19% increases, respectively), while the Americas see a 31% decline in the same period. 🌐 The US market is recovering very slowly from the productions declines that started from 2022-2023. 🌐 EMEA and APAC adjusting more easily to mid-sized or smaller budget projects as well as capitalizing on other domestic favorable factors. Key insights: 💥 Increased focus on international appeal and leveraging tax incentives. 💥Strategic partnerships and co-productions are on the rise. 💥New technologies in media supply-chain also adding to disruption . 💥Slower and more cautious green lighting of projects.
