Like so many other languages, Balochi is resource-limited in the digital world. Google recently added Balochi translation, which is a great achievement for the Baloch community, but it isn’t enough. There are many areas we need to work on to enhance the language’s digital presence. One crucial factor is lemmatization. Lemmatization helps in normalizing words to a common base form, which is crucial for text analysis tasks. It may be hard to believe sometimes, but the internet doesn’t know everything, and it is the one reason why translators are not going away anytime soon (if ever!). Why? The most obvious reason is that the internet can’t understand context. Language is always evolving, and so are the social, economic and political climates in which language is used. Computers also can’t flip through paper dictionaries that neatly organize obscure terms into definitive terms, and which are still the best resource for foreign vocabulary. In my experience, dictionaries provide context-specific explanations, compiled at a specific moment in time, which can then be compared against the way the expression is currently being used on the internet, for example. Through research both in books and online, a translator is able to pinpoint the exact meaning of specific words and phrases. Below are just a few dictionaries from my collection. The Dictionary of Superstitions is a great one for today. On that note, Happy Halloween to those who celebrate!
