My piece on forking open source software is in The New Stack today. Thanks to Dawn Foster Liz Rice and Stephen Walli for their input! A core tenant of open source software, is the ability to lift and shift the code, something that cannot happen in the proprietary software environment as the source isn't shared and available. But recently we've seen some major changes in forking. The Valkey fork may have confirmed that the community’s choice to fork is the perfect counter-attack to certain providers’ bait-and-switch approach to open source. Today, the community has some big players behind it. Perhaps in the future, companies will realize that open source is not a business model and think twice before open sourcing — if they are not in it for the long term. Open source isn’t a marketing tool. It’s for life. Dawn will be joining James Governor and I on the OpenUK Show and Tell at 4pm UK tomorrow to get deep into RedMonk's reporting on the financial impact of licence changes, open washing and forking https://lnkd.in/ddQurMfF And read why we are saying RIP in The Newstack https://lnkd.in/dAaVMc_m #opensource #opensourcesoftware #fork #openuk #thenewstack #Valkey

Let me add that "open source" is the marketing term of "free software".

Noticing yet another post on how bad and ugly companies are changing their license and how this affects the end-users: however, I haven't witnessed so much proposal or commitment to make Open Source sustainable and profitable for individuals, and avoiding PTSD developers.

This is relevant to recent discussions about adapting Open Source, and protecting the "four essential freedoms", for AI, and to my most recent contribution just now (there are several other posts prior that are also pertinent): https://samjohnston.org/2024/10/06/open-source-to-require-documentation-for-the-first-time-for-ai/

Great piece! 👏 The Valkey fork really does highlight how forking can serve as a community’s safeguard against open-source bait-and-switch tactics. Curious—do you think more organisations will adopt stricter licensing to prevent forks, or will they lean into the transparency open source offers? 🔧
