As a creative in advertising, I’ve always known that great ideas tend to get people talking. I’m not sure this video, per se, is a “great idea,” but it’s definitely turning heads as we move our “glass” through iconic Washington, D.C., locations. In the spirit of transparency, it’s all part of a campaign Salta With Us is working on with AAF DC - American Advertising Federation DC Chapter to highlight the values of the American Advertising Awards (ADDYS). I think that more than any other competitions, the Addys focus on judging ideas purely on creative merit; they compete locally first and then climb the Darwinian-creative-ladder all the way up through National. Saw this ad for Kuhl “stylish” fans recently, reminded me strongly of the age-old Kent RO commercial. Not just because Hema Malini endorses both, even the look & feel of the ad (including the colour of HM’s sari) is the same. Looked around a bit to find out that Kuhl is a Kent RO product! Brings to mind 2 questions: 1. Is Kuhl meant to be a category extension leveraging Kent RO equity, & hence the choice of HM & the tone of the ad? If so why Kuhl, why not Kent itself, or a sub-brand at worst? 2. If they were intent on entry through a new brand (maybe fans were found to be a stretch too far in terms of Kent equity extension), then why choose HM & an old communication format, for what they term a “stylish” fan? Views anyone?
