China's Technological Marvels 💫 Next Solo trip to China Mainland for the first time. My current journey through various cities in China has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. Over the past 10 days, I've had the privilege of delving deep into China's tech landscape through various business meetings, and I must say, the advancements here are beyond remarkable. The pace at which the advancements are happening is simply astonishing. Chinese companies are pushing boundaries with groundbreaking applications. The hardware sector is very impressive, with Chinese companies producing cutting-edge devices. The advent of 5G technology has further accelerated connectivity and paved the way for innovations in IoT devices and smart infrastructure. As I continue my stay for another week, I am eagerly looking forward to delving deeper into China's tech ecosystem and gaining more insights into the future of technology. Swiss Batterytech startup BTRY has secured a €153,000 investment from Venture Kick to further develop its innovative one-minute charging solid-state battery. Founded in 2023 as a spin-off of Empa and ETH Zurich by CEO Moritz H. Futscher, CTO Abdessalem Aribia, and scientific advisor Yaroslav Romanyuk, the company has quickly garnered attention for its potential to revolutionize battery technology. BTRY aims to overcome the limitations of traditional lithium-ion batteries, such as slow charging times and temperature sensitivity. By employing thin-film cells stacked using semiconductor fabrication methods, BTRY's solid-state battery achieves a one-minute charge time while maintaining reliable operation in extreme temperatures. Looking ahead, BTRY is initially targeting the IoT market, focusing on batteries for remote sensors, with plans to expand into high-end medical and consumer electronics. The recent funding will be used to demonstrate scalability through pilot production, de-risking the investment for potential backers ahead of a seed funding round planned for Q3 2025.

A new International Monetary Fund working paper, "Stepping Up Venture Capital (VC) to Finance Innovation in Europe," is a wake-up call to enhance the startup financing ecosystem in Europe, with VC at its core. While the 42-page report is a goldmine of information, I found the disparity in the ratio of VC investments to GDP stunning: the US outperformed the EU by 3-4 times over the past decade. Funding innovation via VC is essential for growth, competitiveness, and the green transition. My take-away: similar to how NATO members are encouraged to spend 2% of GDP on defense, should there be a target ratio for VC investments to GDP for innovation in Europe? If yes, which one?
