Something doesn't add up. If Google is getting 25% of their code from AI, and their new CFO is focused on "streamlining" to invest more in AI, then one would expect a 25% topline adder to previous growth, or (unfortunately) a workforce reduction, but Google has done neither. Without other evidence, it seems reasonable to assume the AI is generating boilerplate and code completions (albeit on code blocks rather than just single lines). I'd appreciate a discussion with anyone doing significant AI code generation work. I am curious what the state of the art really is. I have found it useful in my work, but far from completely automated coding. My original post yesterday... Google delivered solid earnings today, and specifically promoted their AI progress. According to Sundar Pichai, "More than a quarter of Alphabet’s new computer code is written by AI." Anyone willing to elaborate further on the types of code that are being generated by AI at Google? I have seen some really cool stuff with open source projects like MetaGPT, but they appear a couple of innovation rounds away from creating production code for critical systems. Of course, Google has a strong incentive to innovate internally, and the deep pockets required to fund it, so it is entirely possible that Pichai's assertion is true. (article below) And you might feel left behind: 25% productivity increase* across all your software developers, analysts, etc. WOW! Where's the catch? The money quote: "I work for Google, and I just got done with my work day. I was just writing I guess what you'd call 'AI generated code.' But the code completion engine is basically just good at finishing the lines I'm writing. Sundar Pichai said on the earnings call today that more than 25% of all new code at Google is now generated by AI. His words: We recently moved the Gemini app team to Google DeepMind to speed up deployment of new models, and streamline post-training work. This follows other structural changes that have unified teams in research, machine learning infrastructure and our developer teams, as well as our security efforts and our Platforms and Devices team. This is all helping us move faster. For instance, it was a small, dedicated team that built Notebook LM, an incredibly popular product that has so much promise. We're also using AI internally to improve our coding processes, which is boosting productivity and efficiency. → Today, more than a quarter of all new code at Google is generated by AI, then reviewed and accepted by engineers.
