How much grid reform can realistically be achieved by 2030? The UK's electricity grid connection system is facing significant backlogs, primarily due to the rapid increase in renewable energy projects and the ageing infrastructure not being able to keep up. As of now, more than 500GW of projects are waiting to connect, with some queued for over 10 years, particularly those with connection dates beyond 2030. This backlog has largely been caused by an 80% rise in applications in the last year alone, straining the grid's capacity. To address this, Ofgem and National Grid Electricity System Operator (NGESO) have introduced reforms aimed at expediting connections and improving efficiency. One of the key changes includes new queue management policies, allowing NGESO to remove stalled projects, and ensuring that active projects progress faster. Additionally, Ofgem has initiated short-term measures, such as transitional offers for grid connections starting from September 2024, intended to prevent bottlenecks while a more robust, reformed system is developed.

Kier Starmer's government, today, unveiled its clean energy strategy for the next 5 years. Notable takeaways include: - grid connection application overhaul to fast-track delivery of mature projects - fast-track application (NSIP) process for onshore wind farms in England - proposal to make Contract for Difference (CfD) agreements available for repowering projects - target to add 19.3GW of new offshore wind, 10.4GW of new onshore wind and 23.2GW of new solar to UK energy mix my 2030 - expand AR7 CfD pot with the inclusion of provisions such as the Clean Energy Bonus (CIB) which will subsidise offshore wind supply chain costs In addition, the planned FID for Sizewell C has been pushed back by 6 months due to delays to the 30% equity stake farm down process. 6 bidders including Centrica, Schroders Greencoat LLP, Emirates Nuclear Energy Company are understood be vying for a slice of the 3.2GW nuclear plant. Are #datacenters hindering our progress towards a clean energy future? A recent article suggests that utilities might be overestimating their #energy needs to justify building new fossil fuel power plants. This could mean less investment in renewable energy sources and grid infrastructure, ultimately slowing down the transition to a sustainable energy mix.

Yesterday afternoon The Sydney Morning Herald reported on the Federal Opposition’s recent energy policy announcements such as the removal of bipartisan support for Australia’s climate targets. The article picked up on our Media Release which outlines why the Coalition’s wavering commitment to Australia’s targets risks undermining investor confidence in the sector. Our Interim CEO Marilyne Crestias was quoted in the article stating that “a stable and predictable policy environment is essential for attracting and retaining the significant capital required to achieve our renewable energy targets.” Clean Energy Investor Group will continue to push for transparent renewable energy policy that encourages investor confidence and supports Australia’s crucial energy transition. #CEIG #energypolicy #energytransition

"Subsidies on this scale allow the federal government to have an outsized influence on the economics of power production. In the paper, Peacock emphasizes this influence, “These taxpayer-funded, government-guaranteed returns are the reason that renewable generation is swamping the U.S. electric grid and pushing investment in reliable thermal generation to the side. Investment in renewables grew from $29.4 billion in 2010 to $55.4 billion in 2019 as investors chased subsidized profits.” https://lnkd.in/eWsFJ3qj

⚡ UK's Energy Future: New Gas-Fired Power Stations to Decarbonise the Grid ⚡ The UK may need to construct new gas-fired power stations to ensure energy security during the net-zero transition. Key points include: 🔹 Energy Security: New gas plants are essential backups for renewable energy, preventing potential blackouts during periods of high demand and low renewable output. 🔸 Net-Zero Ready: Future plants will be designed to integrate carbon capture technology or adapt to hydrogen use, aligning with the UK's 2035 decarbonisation goals. 🔹 Government Strategy: This move is part of a broader strategy to maintain a stable and reliable energy supply while transitioning to cleaner energy sources. #EnergyTransition #NetZero #CarbonCapture #UKEnergy For more details: https://lnkd.in/d-7efcbh

Encouraging to see support for the UK Government's #cleanenergy plans from the IEA's head Fatih Birol in today's Times. “[The 2030 target] is not only important for the UK at home but also for UK industries, to be an important player globally - Birol” UK energy stakeholders including the #UKsupplychain must recognise the window of opportunity that the new Government has opened to investment into the energy sector and the once-in-a-generation shake-up of infrastructure planning #cleanpower #NetZero #sustainability #offshorewind #ukrenewables #newnuclear #2050 #UKenergy #UKsolar #batterystorage #UKnuclear https://lnkd.in/eEgv735s

Good to see plans for the WA SWIS connected 600MW Ambrosia wind farm being announced. We understand this project has been enabled by the Stage 1 SWISDA upgrades with Western Power replacing the dual 132kV lines between Muja and Kojonup with 330kV lines. Investment in state owned infrastructure such as HV transmission is essential to enable the energy transition. The next Whole of System Plan needs to factor in State government's appetite for investment in the options being considered. Little point having an ideal plan that fails the first hurdle. https://lnkd.in/gYNgSwhY
