What does it mean to be a Non-Executive Director nowadays? When to start thinking about this career path? I found this insight from our UK colleagues, Board Practice, very interesting. So many people think about the best way to combine executive and non-executive roles. The good thing is that they might be very complementary, with a strong value to build on both sides: "My executive role in the private sector allows our team to move faster on initiatives and this is something which I bring to my non-executive role, where traditionally businesses move slower. It has also supported me from a networking perspective, opening more doors, allowing more partnerships to happen in my executive role, which contributes to the bottom line". #boardroom #career #NED #executive Odgers Berndtson Luxembourg #Csuite #executivesearch

It was inspiring to join so many committed #professionals in Canary Wharf today at the second KPMG Social Mobility Conference. It was especially valuable to hear early #career experiences shared by senior #leaders which “exposed” their #socioeconomic backgrounds, and revealed the potential for #cultural #mismatch in their chosen #professions. For example, one told of an #interview with a senior #partner in which he'd nervously remarked the lemonade he'd been offered had no flavour, and was told with a chuckle, “it’s actually sparkling water”. Something he'd never tasted before. Another said he took everything from a minibar, as never having stayed in a hotel before, he'd assumed it was free. These stories reminded me of the time, during my teens, when I was introduced to a very posh old chap. He shook my hand and said “How do you do?” I answered “I’m very well, thank you”. Smirking, in what he probably presumed was a kindly way, he replied “Oh dear. Don’t you know the correct response is also “How do you do?” It's a convention, not a question!" Of course, I did not know. Does anyone but a very few from a specific social strata? My face burned with embarrassment. In contrast, he seemed pleased to have have "taught me something jolly useful." Cultural mismatch continues to play an important role in fuelling #inequality in #business, #practice, #entrepreneurship and the #professions. The #class ceiling still exists, impeding #access to #opportunity and #progression. But it can be reduced. There were many excellent examples shared today of practical work to open and integrate diverse norms and practices that make up professional cultures. #Kudos KPMG for convening this '#community. City, University of London leads London's universities in enabling #social #mobility. All #talent is #welcome here. #leadership Nik Miller #socialmobility #diversity #inclusion #business #practice #students #talent #employability #skills #futureofwork

As McKinsey recently asked, “Is being a CEO one of the loneliest roles?” I want to be clear: this is not a sob story. Being a CEO is the most rewarding career role I have ever had. But there is no denying the support structures are different from what I had as a Nurse Unit Manager back in Wagga Wagga or an Executive Director of Nursing in Kalgoorlie, but the connections, values, knowledge, and trust I've developed are invaluable. I have a small group of friends, people I trust, whose opinions I value, who have my values and who tell me off or lift me up when needed. It is well-known that (most) humans like to surround themselves with like-minded people. I know I grew my tribe through osmosis, working and intersecting with like-minded people. But equally unsurprising is that as you move through your career, you will have fewer people in your trusted inner circle. Is it because you become more mature and discerning to have a quality tribe you can rely on or something else? So, how do you navigate through having fewer people to draw on, fewer people to enable you to bounce your ideas around and avoid becoming stale or irrelevant? One solution is to expand your circle, be brave, engage with others, coffee date, bring people in to inspire and work with, invigorate you or mentor and give back. Remember, these new connections can bring fresh perspectives and opportunities, offering a world of hope and excitement for your future. You also have the chance to impart your knowledge and who knows what might happen! This journey of expanding your circle can be a catalyst for personal growth and inspiration. I would love to hear about your journey. 20 years ago, when I first set up as an independent strategy consultant, I quickly realised that to thrive in this space, I couldn’t rely solely on my personal connections to secure the challenging, high-impact projects I wanted to work on. I needed to extend my reach. That’s when I came across Eden McCallum, a pioneering ‘virtual’ strategy consulting firm that delivers high-profile strategic projects—typically reserved for top-tier traditional firms—through its network of experienced independent consultants. Their Talent Pool comprises seasoned professionals (typically with 10 to 30 years’ experience) who have worked at leading strategy consulting firms, many with deep sector-specific knowledge and expertise. Twenty years later, I’m still proud to be part of this network, and very grateful for the opportunities that have come my way through it. Last night, I attended Eden McCallum’s annual drinks and had the absolute pleasure of catching up with the fabulous Lianne Eden and Christopher Humphry, both of whom I’ve had the privilege to work with many times over those years. It was also a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow independent consultants, exchange insights, and share practical advice with someone who is just starting her journey in independent consulting. Something I love to do! If you’re an independent strategy consultant looking to broaden your reach, I can’t recommend Eden McCallum enough. Not only will you gain access to impactful, rewarding projects—including pro-bono opportunities that deliver real impact —but you’ll also be part of a supportive and inspiring community that fosters a genuine sense of belonging. And for clients, Eden McCallum offers a fantastic alternative to a traditional consulting firm: world-class strategic expertise tailored to tackle your specific challenge, with the structure and quality assurance of a traditional firm, but at a fraction of the cost. A true win-win. Pic shows the fabulous Eden McCallum office in Covent Garden where the drinks were hosted #IndependentConsulting #StrategyConsulting #EdenMcCallum #Impact

What an amazing journey it has been! I am happy to share that I have been promoted to Director! 🙌 ✨ First, a super huge thank you to RSM for all the amazing opportunities I have had over the years. To all the mentors, colleagues, and friends who have been part of this journey, thank you for your guidance, support, and for making my time so far at RSM truly special. 💖 I am so grateful to find myself here, doing something I am deeply passionate about - ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) 💚🌎. Since starting in 2016, my time has been filled with growth, learning, and so many memorable moments. I am particularly excited for the opportunity to lead our global efforts for ESG for RSM North America, which is a role that truly aligns with my passion and ambition. One thing I’ve learned is that when opportunities arise, even if you’re afraid or unsure, it’s legendary to do it anyway (Miley Cyrus quote). At RSM, there are so many opportunities, and you’ll always have the support to dive in and try! A unique place that not only allows you to discover yourself but also provides the support, investment and environment to truly build on your passions and skillset. I wanted to attach some photos to this post but I couldn’t just pick a few as I realized I had way too many memories to choose from. So instead, I created a video that captures some of the best moments of my time at RSM! - A better recap of my experience so far and showcasing the amazing people I’ve met along the way! And because we know that I always go all out and sometimes can't help it… I couldn’t resist doing something a little extra for this post haha 😆 I hope you enjoy the video, which is layered with a song, Clarity by Zedd, that has lyrics that talk about finding your remedy, and for me, RSM and ESG has been just that. Thank you all for being part of this incredible ride. Here’s to the next chapter as we #growforwardatRSM ! Recent studies on Australia's top 250 board directors reveal some eye-opening figures on remuneration. The financial allure is undeniable, with many directors approaching or exceeding the $1M mark, primarily through ASX board roles enhanced by committee and advisory work. The progression from modest beginnings (perhaps earning just a few hundred per meeting) to substantial earnings highlights a compelling career trajectory for those considering a shift toward board positions. This is especially attractive for executives contemplating an early exit from the corporate world to develop a lucrative board portfolio. For anyone starting, patience is key. Initial earnings may be low, and unpaid board roles are typical, but long-term benefits should be considered. Strategic career investments and a focus on professional development can eventually lead to high-profile, well-compensated board appointments. #BoardDirector #CareerAdvice #ExecutiveGrowth #ProfessionalDevelopment

Directors increasingly involved in operations as #trust in executive teams wanes The once clear-cut boundary between #nonexecutivedirectors and #seniormanagement is becoming increasingly blurred, with a significant number of #businessleaders indicating a lack of full #trust in their executive teams to effectively manage operations. According to an annual report by Heidrick & Struggles, the global headhunting firm, more than a fifth of directors surveyed, including those from FTSE 350 companies, expressed concerns about their #executiveteams’ ability to “get things done.” The report, which surveyed over 3,000 CEOs and directors worldwide, highlights a growing trend of non-executive board members becoming more operationally involved. This shift is particularly pronounced in the UK, where nearly three-quarters of respondents acknowledged increased board involvement in day-to-day operations, with 22% reporting frequent involvement and 49% noting occasional participation. Heidrick & Struggles’ 2024 Board Monitor Report analysed responses from more than 3,000 #ceos and #companyexecutives in the UK and around the world, to examine whether #boardmembers might be “crossing the traditional line between oversight and management”. This shift in board dynamics underscores the evolving challenges faced by businesses today and the critical need for a #collaborative approach to #leadership and #governance. https://lnkd.in/ektd7NuR

Last week, the second part of the “EY Journey to the Boardroom Program” took place in Munich. This time, the focus of the two days was on the talent agenda. Both days were packed with exciting presentations and encounters. Special thanks go to our speakers: Victoria Tomlinson FRSA from Next-Up, who introduced us to the world of Effective Networking; Rolf Beckers from Spencer Stuart, who provided highly valuable insights into the world of board placements; Markus Heinen, who spoke passionately on the topic "Humans@Center as a Differentiator"; Special thanks go to Carla Kriwet, who shared a lot of very fruitful thought and hands on advice from her personal journey to the board and Georg Graf Waldersee, who shared valuable experiences from his vast board experiences. Of course, we ended the day with a hearty Bavarian dinner and used the evening for networking and discussions about the topics previously addressed. The second day began with an intense and interactive presentation by Victoria Tomlinson FRSA on the topic of personal brand building, followed by Dr. Anja Pissarczyk's presentation on "Personnel Competence – Supervisory Board,". The prominent topic of executive compensation could not be missed – many thanks to Jens Massmann for the enriching presentation and valuable insights. The day ended with a visit to the #EYFourFutures installation at the Munich #EYWavespace. The confrontation with four visions of our future world not only moved us and prompted us to think and act but also prepared us for our next Stop in January, where the main topics will be dealing with ESG, sustainability, and current geopolitical changes. I am already looking very much forward to it! Matters covered in the EY Journey to the Board Program, are career development and the hot topics of today’s board agenda including latest developments in #CorporateGovernance, #Sustainability, #Transformation, #ArtificialIntelligence, #Digitalization, #HumanResource, #SuccessionPlanning, #Geopolitics and #Strategy
