What does it take for nature investing to go into the mainstream?   At the TTI Nature Investment Summit on Tuesday 11 June in London, I will join a panel moderated by Alessa Berg on current challenges and opportunities for #assetmanagers to invest in #nature. #naturalcapital is critical. The loss of biodiversity on earth is not just an environmental issue; it's a ticking time bomb to the stability of our civilisation and the economic system that supports it. We humans and our civilization are entirely dependent on the biodiversity of Earth. Thanks so much to World Agri-Tech and the fabulous panellists this morning where we were debunking some myths around investing in nature, exploring the realities of bankable projects and taking a reality check on what investors really want out of the green transition in the food sector. The big question that is on everyone's lips seems to be 'who pays' for the transition? Will customers pay - unlikely. Philanthropy has a role to play but will only get you so far. Private capital needs to accelerate into the sector. We need the right blend of capital and mechanisms to unlock the right combination. How can we channel more institutional money into sustainable food and agriculture? BloombergNEF is extending its industry-leading research and data capabilities into this space, and we are meeting with leading farmland investors at the Global AgInvesting gathering in New York this week to explore further. According to BloombergNEF, $1.8 trillion of capital was invested in the energy transition space in 2023. However, despite agriculture and food systems being responsible for one-third of the world's GHG emissions, the sector currently receives a minimal share of private money flowing into climate solutions. This is despite the fact that the sector holds the keys to combatting nature loss and food insecurity. Early movers gain valuable expertise and networks, and nature-focused solutions can lead to better pricing advantages and deal flow compared to more crowded investment areas. However, it's not all sunshine and rainbows.
