Great article by Alexander E. Brunner on AI VC investments and where the money actually goes. See below full article, but picking out one aspect of it which is the valuation and also a Swiss view to it:
The venture world in the US is struggling. In 2024, VC investments are at a third of 2021 levels, what a drop. Most of this funding goes to AI, with 200 AI deals worth $22 billion, averaging $1 billion in valuation. This is 5 to 6 times the valuation and funding size of non-AI companies. Hence is quite obvious that for non-AI unicorns, raising money is nearly impossible. Last round valuations are likely too high, and startup valuations are now gauged by secondary share sales at much lower multiples. This results in valuations 50-75% lower than the last funding round, with the US IPO market for startups almost non-existent.
AI Chatbot for Investor Inquiries and a Swiss view:
Swiss AI startup founders are swamped with investor requests, with one even building a GenAI chatbot to manage inquiries. Swiss AI legaltech startup DeepJudge recently secured a $10.7 million seed round from Coatue, indicating that even international startups are benefiting from the US AI investment wave. Great news.
