In other news, universities are starting to plan very seriously for decarbonisation, including some that have a well-defined path ahead of them and others at an earlier stage of 'maturity' in their thinking. According to S&P Global, utilities will only be retiring 3.0 GW of U.S. coal-fired capacity in 2024, which will be the lowest level since 2015. While 14.1 GW are currently scheduled for retirement in 2025, this is more than 15% below the 2025 levels estimated in late 2023. The drop in retirements is driven in large part by utilities looking to meet the rise in electricity demand by tech companies, which are building datacenters to support new artificial intelligence applications. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates datacenters could consume up to 9% of annual U.S. electricity generation by 2030. Click below to review this and other news L.E. Spent two days at the CIRED (International Community on Electricity Distribution) Workshop in beautiful Vienna last week. I’ve presented our paper „Evaluating the trade-off between grid expansion and flexibility usage in electrical distribution grids“ which was co-authored by Florian Klein-Helmkamp, Maxim Müllender, Jan Martin Specht, Riemenschneider David and Andreas Ulbig as part of a joint project between E.ON and our Institute at RWTH. Our core findings are: - The cost optimal trade-off contains a sensible combination of grid expansion AND flexibility measures - The specific sweet spot is dependent on the grid structure - Urban grids: the usage of flexibility measures is highly efficient due to higher expansion costs and the higher availability of flexibility - Rural grids: high efficiency of grid expansion measures - Price driven operation of flexible units will lead to fundamentally different occurrence of congestions within the grids

During his confirmation hearing last week, Department of the Interior Secretary nominee Doug Burgum acknowledged that the process for permitting transmission projects takes much too long and noted this issue is "one of the challenges of our time." "It's one thing to be able to generate that electricity, but if we don't have the ability to transmit it to the places where it's needed, that's going to be a problem," Burgum said. He's right – that's why it's critical for the U.S. to invest in an upgraded and expanded transmission network by deploying Grid-Enhancing Technologies and High-Performance Conductors on the existing system as well as building new regional and interregional transmission lines. In August 2024, the US Department of Energy announced it's partnership with the Grace Complex located in Lancaster, SC as part of the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnership Program (GRIP). No more digging? That could potentially be the new reality when it comes to installing charging stations in cities. Today, constructing charging stations requires a lot of time and resources. Addel has a module that replaces street paving and eliminates the need for excavation, enabling faster installations with reduced environmental impact. As a part of a test project enabled by testbed vouchers with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, they are looking for a suitable location in Linköping to test their module.
