President & CEO at Solar Energy Industries Association

January 20, 2025…….and its Inauguration Day here in Washington. As I am sure you know, it's super cold here and President Trump decided to move the ceremony indoors.   Today’s activities have me thinking about past inaugurations, both where I have been and where our industry has been.   When I was young, my parents took me to several inaugural parades (I grew up right outside of DC). We went to lots of parades, however, and I have to admit that I don’t recall a lot of specifics.   I remember exactly where I was (in my first months as an associate at Hogan Lovells) when the Supreme Court decided Bush v. Gore in December of 2000.   And in January 2009, I watched Barack Obama become our President in a hearing room with a big television in a state office building in Annapolis, surrounded by lots of people, none of whom I knew. Eight years ago, on the day of President Trump’s first inauguration, I was on day four as CEO of SEIA... I was feeling anxious about many things, including how I would handle this new job and what a Trump administration would mean for solar and storage. Today, eight years later, my inauguration day looks a lot different. I am starting year nine as CEO of SEIA. I’m headed to participate in inauguration celebrations with the Republican Governors Association. And, importantly, America’s #solar and #storage industry is different. We are exponentially stronger… and I want to remind you just how different things are: Today, there is over 5x more solar capacity deployed in the U.S. today than there was in 2017. The value of the solar market is over 3x larger. Today, there are more solar businesses than ever. We employ more Americans than ever, and we make up a larger share of U.S. electricity demand than ever. We’re manufacturing over 10x more modules in the United States than when President Trump first took office and, for the first time, we’re building a robust supply chain of solar and storage components. Despite the uncertainty of the 2017 inauguration day, the solar and storage industry grew over the course of President Trump’s first term. And we will grow again under his second.    So, as I head off to the inaugural celebrations to ensure that American energy dominance is inclusive of the solar and storage industry, know that our sector is resilient and resourceful. We got this. Now, let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work.

Does SEIA use donation / membership funds to directly impact solar policy by leveraging aggressive lobbyists?

Thank you for all of your hard work, and thank you for those stories, a trip down memory lane for sure. I remember watching the Bush V Gore election from Egypt, wondering what the heck was going on in the U.S. I have people like yourself to thank for my great experiance building the substations for many of the solar farms around the country the past 10 years. My first project was finishing just as President Trump was elected to his first term. I still was and am constantly asking what the heck is going on in the U.S.? Happy MLK day. Stay Warm!!! 😊
