📊 Unveiling the reality of Emissions Reporting: Gross vs. Net Emissions The debate over how emissions are reported is heating up, and the chart below from Bloomberg Green highlights a critical issue: unbundled renewable energy certificates (RECs) are masking the true emissions footprints of major tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta . At Trace, we believe in transparency and accuracy in carbon accounting. That's why we’re moving towards Gross Emissions Reporting on our platform. While net emissions offer insight into how companies are acting on climate, they don't tell the full story. Gross emissions provide a clearer picture of a company's current impact—no hiding behind RECs. This shift is crucial as businesses aim to meet Net Zero goals without falling into the trap of inflated progress. It's about facing the reality of our carbon footprints and making meaningful, measurable changes. We invite you to explore this conversation further—let's discuss how gross emissions reporting can drive genuine climate action. #Emissions #Carbon #NetZero #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Transparency #Trace #GrossEmissionsReporting Joanna Auburn Catherine (Cat) Long
👿 The devil is in the detail 👿 🤔 Gross Vs Net emissions reporting 🤔 If we take a look at some of the big dogs; Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Google they are all reporting emission increases even though they have committed to Net Zero and are investing considerably into it. Microsoft's emissions are 30% higher today than in 2022! Could AI be to blame? That's another conversation. Bloomberg Green raised a great point on the debate of measuring emissions recently which is exactly in line with some changes we have recently made in the Trace platform. Carbon Accounting and how we account for this carbon is incredibly important. Currently large companies can buy RECs to compensate for emissions in energy usage. Corporations are purchasing these and using them to demonstrate reductions in their footprint. Currently this is allowed under the CDP rules. But these aren't actually reductions in that company's footprint. This calls for a separation of gross and net emissions reporting; even in scope 2. It might seem like a detail that shouldn't be of great concern but if you look at the chart below you can see the huge impact this has on reporting. For example Amazon's footpirnt would be 8.5 million tonnes higher than reported if they were not allowed to include RECs to 'reduce' their footprint. Google seems to be the only one not using unbundled RECs in its emissions reporting. At Trace we are moving to Gross emissions reporting, you will be able to see your net emissions but these will be a separate number and should not be used for reporting on the emissions of your organisation today. I can see the other side of the coin - we need to be motivated by progress and see that reflected in the numbers. Net emissions reporting does allow for that. But it is somewhat a false sense of achievement. Net emissions are a great way for a business to demonstrate where and how they are acting on climate but it is not the whole picture. I'd love to hear more thoughts on this- comment below! #emissions #carbon #netzero Google Meta for Business, Microsoft Amazon Trace
