Very important read from Tim Baxter detailing the Gorgon CCS saga so far. "Even if Chevron was capable of meeting its legal obligations in a way that it has shown itself to be unable or unwilling to commit to do, Gorgon CCS could never have made a dent in the climate crisis."

"...there are always hyperlocal reasons that CCS underperforms. At a certain point, we need permission to start generalising from underperformance at every single site to what that says about the use of the technology by the oil and gas industry overall." Could CCS technology be useful for decarbonising "hard-to-abate" sectors, and removing "residual" emissions as we approach mid-century NZ milestones? Mmmm, sure... in theory yes. 🫡 Should we allow the fossil fuel industry to use overblown promises of CCS deployment, which they have demonstrated neither the intention nor the ability to keep, to continue to expand and lock-in fossil fuel infrastructure, bankrolled by government funding? No. Absolutely not?! For God's. Sake. No. 🫠

CCS is the worst technology boondoggle of the 21st century. One very simple question to illustrate my point: What would the carbon capture impact have been if all the dollars that have gone to the oil and gas companies of the world to build these ultra-failure projects had gone into reforestation efforts, I.e. spent on planting trees?! Tell me again about the govt handouts to renewables. Talk about corporate socialism.

There are a number of questions here - 1. Why is the gas contract with Chevron, that was conditional upon 80% carbon capture via CCS, not being enforced? 2. Why is this failure, arguably the largest failure of any CCS project globally, not more widely reported? 3. Why are the state and federal environment ministers not reviewing this urgently, given the significant impact on our CO2 emissions? 4. Are the assumptions that are being used for our national net zero calculations being made on the basis that Gorgon and similar projects are functioning as intended, when they are not? Thanks Tim Baxter for shining another light into the murky world of oil and gas exploration. It's this sort of "keeping the lights on" that I feel is the most useful in the energy sector 🙏
