- Before we dive into this section, we have to give credit to a lady named Virginia Satir. She was a family therapist. Then she came up with what's known as the Satir categories, and these are the foundational hand gestures that we should all learn and master to become more effective with our gestures. Now, before we dive into the Satir categories, what do you think most people do when they don't know what to do with their hands? Number one, they put them in their pockets. Yes, people put their hands in their pockets, right? This is a non-functional gesture. Next, they put their hands on their hips. Some people cross their arms. The next one is the classic hands behind the back, and then the slight rocking back and forth. Then you've also got the classic prayer position, and then you've also got the evil power plant owner.
