Lesson 1: Overview of wireless networks

(bright subtle music) - [Instructor] In this lesson, we're going to get an overview of wireless networks and talk about some of the different pieces and parts that make up a wireless local area network, or a WLAN. We're going to begin by taking a look at wireless access points, or APs. They have antennas inside, and they receive and transmit radio waves and convert data communicated in the radio waves with data communicated on a wired network. We'll consider various wireless LAN designs, and see that an access point can operate in a dedicated mode to do a specific job on the network if we want. For example, we might have an access point whose sole purpose in life is to scan the radio frequency spectrum and look for malicious or rogue wireless access points that some bad actor has attempted to add to our network.
