Strong macro-tailwinds - Compute for AI is a mature market with sustainable demand growth from new models over the next years - But the compute demand is already exceeding data center capacities and supply of GPUs, creating a supply constraint for Nvidia’s top units - AI model development is attracting large amounts of funding, much of which will be dedicated to computation and costs/performance will matter more and more. 2. The need for a European AI infrastructure - Compute power is high on the geopolitical agenda. Who will control AI will control the world. - European AI model companies rely today on US-based hardware and US-based cloud providers to build "European" AI models - If Data sovereignty and security matter, then there is an urgent need for a European AI compute platform 3. An exceptionally skilled team to build this European AI compute platform - Brijesh has built customized systems and hardware for AI use cases at NVIDIA and Apple before, and designed + scaled compute systems for autonomous driving at Tesla and Zoox, as well as with the Intel super-compute platform - Dali has a demonstrated track record of executing and delivering both hardware and software projects, and leading engineering teams (this is the second time we back him, not a coincidence!) - both have known each other for a long time and worked together at NVIDIA. have built GPUs themselves and were there when Apple and Tesla decided their launch their own chips for the exact same reasons (cost and performance trade-off + reduce dependency on third party suppliers). - They have already demonstrated the strength of their network by signing key partnerships even before product launch and have assembled Tier 1 advisors around FlexAI. YC S24 Summary I think a lot of you have been waiting for this one! YC S24 in numbers: - 256 companies were announced, 243 presented at demo days. - 193 companies in Machine Learning / AI. - 160 companies from the US. - 37 women-founded companies! We started working with the batch well before demo day. We selected 30 companies (which turned out to be the top of the batch), and managed to have calls with 22. In the end, we invested in just 1 company! We wanted to invest in 2, but didn’t have space in the round of the second one. They offered us a spot at a valuation $5M higher than yesterday, so we declined. The alignment between companies' performance and valuations is pure madness. Here are some real examples (revenue - round size and valuation): 1. $870k ARR - $3M at $30M 2. $250k ARR - $1.5M at $25M 3. No revenue - $2M at $25M 4. $700k ARR - $5M at $40M 5. $18k ARR - $2.5M at $25M Honestly, I couldn’t believe it. Most of the calls were before demo day, and in all these cases, 70-80% of the round was already committed! I’m Djoann Fal. I started my first tech startup at 22, exited when I was 29, and being French, I’m probably the only black guy who’s done that in Asia. But that was just the beginning of something much, much bigger... Since 2021, I’ve been fascinated by our planet, our changing weather, and the possibility of peaceful, green technological utopian cities becoming a reality. This year, through our several Atlas Climate Tech Coalition events, we gathered up more than 300+ family offices, VCs, and conglomerate members, representing $22 billion dollars of committed capital allocated to technologies saving our planet from ourselves. "Agentic AI" is the buzzword in VC. But can AI agents actually plan and act ? 💡 The idea is that AI systems can plan and execute workflows autonomously with goals inputs. Example: "book me a 7 day trip in France that costs no more than X to discover hidden cultural gems". Does it work with the current AI systems? 🙅‍♂️ According to DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, current AI systems are not good at planning, they can't problem solve, they can't do actions in the world for you. They are "very much passive Q&A systems". However according to Demis, this might be the next era in AI. 👀 By combining the work done with AlphaGo in games (agent players that are very good at planning) with multi-modal "real world" learning (Gemini) and applying this to language and everyday workloads, he believes that we might get there. If needed, we schedule dedicated calls for deeper discussions on strategic topics. Regular in-person meetings in different cities keep us connected without the overhead of a permanent office. 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀, 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁: Remote work demands trust as you cannot see what people are doing, which we build through clearly defined tasks, deadlines and roles. This clarity ensures that everyone is aligned. 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗣𝗜𝘀: Understanding what outcomes need to be achieved every quarter is key. Especially as we continue fundraising and deploying capital. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Our culture is built on radical candor and transparency, ensuring everyone is working towards the same goals. Open discussions and quick feedback loops allow us to address issues openly. This environment encourages accountability and continuous improvement. This allows us to be proactive rather than reactive, a necessity in remote work where spontaneous problem-solving isn’t as easy. 🤨 What do I look for in co-founders ? 🤨 This is the question I get asked the most often, and I (finally) have a good answer! At Hexa, I partner with entrepreneurs ~3x/year, a CEO and CTO for each project— essentially “marrying” 6x/year to build the best partnerships. I look for 4 key traits in my co-founders ⤵️ ⚡️ Energy booster Building and growing a company is about convincing people to follow you—investors, clients, team members—and the person’s natural energy is a key factor in achieving this. I call these people exothermic: they move things around them simply by the energy they exude. How do I test this? I need to feel more energized at the end of a meeting with them than I did at the start. ⏰ Sense of urgency The higher the velocity in a startup, the faster it will grow. Having a deep need to act and get things done sets the fast-paced tempo I’m looking for. 🧑‍🏫 Thirst for self-improvement Founders who are constantly looking to improve by proactively seeking feedback and showing vulnerability have an endless strength to overcome the (inevitable) challenges of entrepreneurship. 🏋️‍♀️ Commitment Being a founder means making your company part of your top priorities, it’s a journey that’s all-consuming. It's already hard to get into the top-tier YC world. It's 10x times harder if you're in Europe. Even if you're in Silicon valley, it's still hard to get into the YC ecosystem. Why? Because YC is tightly closed and protected environment. An exclusive world where demo day access is invite-only for the insiders. In the world there are only 400 handpicked guests attended the last in-person event. It was purely an insider event. You have to be an insider to get access to the best deals. And I'm on of the 400 investors who's on that list. This is why I love YC so much: Statistically 6% of these startups will become unicorns. Making them the best asset class you could ever invest your money into. But, it's almost impossible to gain access to them…. You can get access through me, and that's as close to those YC start-ups as you could ever get.
