An #Estonian problem has found a #Latvian solution During the 1990s and early 2000s, Estonia cherished the free market like almost no other country. Trade with no barriers, little effort to save outdated industries, privatisation wherever possible and inviting foreign investment were the cures for swift modernisation and growth. These policies turned out extremely successful for Estonia, resulting in faster growth and faster change than elsewhere in the region. #Monopoly and semi-monopoly sectors however taught Estonia the limits of a free market. Railways, municipal water systems and aviation industry, being monopoly or semi-monopoly set-ups produced less favourable results for consumers and the government. Estonia’s #railways were renationalised in 2007 due to disagreements between private owners regarding obligations and pricing. #Tallinn #water, majority owned by a foreign investors had been widely accused of excessive prices that were widely considered above market value, resulting in the City of Tallinn reacquiring a majority stake by 2021. A particular failure was privatisation of national airline Estonian Air. Owned partly by Danish conglomerate private owners kept the airline small and fed passengers into Scandinavian Airlines’ networks, whereas Estonia’s neighbouring country Latvia heavily invested into their national airline Air Baltic, growing Latvia’s capital into a regional hub. Tallinn airport lost its leading position in the 1990s and by the time Estonian government realised that the country was becoming final stop on a metro line in terms of connectivity, it decided to renationalise the airline in 2010. That time turned out very unfortunate for turning things around. Estonian Air sought to build more capacity of transit passengers, but its expansionary business turned out as a colossal failure, resulting in later bankruptcy due to EU’s state aid rules. A second national airline Nordica started running a number of days after Estonian Air’s demise, but its wings got stuck in the covid crisis and the airline focused on franchise flights instead regular services from Tallinn. However, with a recent announcement Latvia’s airBaltic will be offering direct services to 17 all-year round destinations from Tallinn from summer 2025 with another 14 seasonal routes. Estonia is no longer impossible to reach from major European cities. A semi-free market failure has been solved by a semi-free market solution with Latvia’s national airline offering better connectivity from Tallinn than Estonia’s own airlines used to do.

Poles are actively participating in contests and promotions, which is clearly visible in the results of the latest IRCenter and Pluxee Poland report. Here is some key information: 🔹 Over the past year, as many as 80% of Poles took part in various types of promotional activities. 🔹 2% of participants say that participating in contests helps them remember brands and products better. 🔹 66% of respondents admit that they are more likely to buy products that offer a chance to win. What motivates Poles to participate? 🔸 The biggest motivator is cash prizes, such as gift cards or eVouchers, which are popular with as many as 75% of participants. 🔸 Clear and simple rules for participating in promotions increase willingness to participate. Is My Audience on LinkedIn? Our sales events platform, Auctibles, targets Poland. We built sale events so merchants can run them as simply as a Zoom call. The intention is for merchants to bring their own audience to their sale event. Scrolling through the LinkedIn posts from Poland, I see many consultants and companies offering services. These are not merchants, so it is a challenge of type - finding a needle in the haystack. Alternatively, it is a challenge of type - targeting. There is currently big debate in Poland regarding relation between so called news media and global platforms. I rarely comment on such topics, but this one is close to my heart. Feel free to grill me. I believe most people in this debate are using different definitions to describe what is happening. There are three concepts: media, publishers, journalists. Via Wikipedia: 1. Media (communication) - tools used to convey information or data. 2. Publisher - an organization or person that disseminates content to the public. 3. Journalist - a person who gathers information in the form of text, sound, or images, processes it into a form worth conveying, and disseminates it publicly. This is called journalism. Traditionally, media mainly referred to the press, meaning print. A technical tool. In this press (newspapers, magazines, yellow press), publishers disseminated many things, including journalism, but also other content like sports results, advertisements, stock market data, and even pornography or celebrity photos. These things were often more important to the audience than journalism. This did not make the press something noble (or better) than other media, like TV or radio. Media are just tools. Also, publishers themselves did not necessarily have noble motives related to journalism. It was believed that to be a good commercial publisher, it was worth having good journalism - in my opinion, mainly because it allowed for higher advertising rates in media used by the publisher (thus increasing the value of the distribution tool). In the opinion of others, it was about attracting attention. Some believe it was done for the public good. This belief, as the new medium - the internet - showed up, turned out to be false. Advertisements can be sold just as expensively without quality journalism (you just need good data). Publishers can, but do not have to, sponsor so-called good content or journalism. Publishers can make big bucks without even producing so called content. It also turned out that journalists do not need the help of commercial media to create valuable information and disseminate it (e.g., Oko Press). What we see today is, in my opinion, a mix-up. Commercial publishers (mostly profit-oriented companies) are trying to defend their outdated tools (media) using the argument of defending journalism (public mission). Nowadays, however, these three things are not connected. I believe that journalism in the free commercial model (i.e., open online) has no future. Future lies with paid media (e.g., Oko Press) or media sustained by public funds and taxation of global media corporations (Google and similar). What I am not addressing here is the issue of the fourth estate, i.e., the control function traditionally understood as the press (implicitly - hard journalism, including investigative journalism) towards democratic power and its role in the fight against autocratic regimes. This is a political problem, not a business one.

It's time to sum up and update my profile: First and foremost, together with partners, we successfully closed the deal, selling 100% of YCLIENTS to VK Group. It was a highly successful exit for the founders and all investors, considering YCLIENTS has been operating exclusively in Russia since the beginning of 2022. Since mid-2022, YCLIENTS has been effectively led by Igor Bronin, who impressively shaped the business growth curve in 2023 while I was finalizing the deal and preparing the business for a seamless merge with VK. I confidently step back, knowing I've left the team and more than 45K paying clients in the hands of an exceptional leader. After the deal, I had planned to take some time off, but it didn't happen. Last September, an opportunity arose to acquire the Brazilian business of Altegio from one of the partners. I've been providing extensive consulting to the team, but the local market is incredibly challenging. In February this year, the business will be relaunched, presenting a formidable challenge with no time for relaxation. Altegio emerged in 2022 immediately after the start of the war in Ukraine. Many YCLIENTS franchisees and distributors worldwide couldn't continue their operations, being dependent on the Russian business. The only viable solution at that time was to transfer the product and intellectual property rights to each franchisee, resulting in several independent businesses under a new brand with offices in Armenia, Brazil, Ukraine, Cyprus, Hungary, Serbia, Dubai, and Kazakhstan. The next significant challenge is to consolidate Altegio into a unified holding with a single management center. I plan to invest my own funds and subsequently seek external funding. I strongly believe in this story - current Altegio partners not only maintained the business without external investments but also expanded their presence. Under the challenging environment, Altegio nearly doubled it’s revenue and surpassed 8,000 active businesses in 84 countries in 2023. In conclusion: I won't be able to assist you with any inquiries related to YCLIENTS anymore. Please refer all questions to the current management of YCLIENTS. I would be delighted to hear your partnership proposals with Altegio which is exclusively operate on global markets excluding Russia and Belarus. For quite some time now, I have been living in Brazil, and I would be happy to share my experience about the local market. I will be leading the round and will contribute around half a million of my own funds, ensuring strong personal commitment to Altegio. According to a recent Dealroom.co's report, the AI Core startups received 45% of all VC investment in the CEE region. This is an opportunity we cannot miss!💥 My key theses: 📌At Movens Capital, we are investing in AI-enabled companies starting in 2019 based on our previous startup experience. They distinguish the #CEE region. By 2023, more than 1,000 AI/ML startups had emerged here, raising more than USD 4 billion in funding. 📌We see a great opportunity for Polish AI startups to succeed due to their unique technological talent. Building a sustainable #competitiveadvantage is key, as illustrated by ElevenLabs, but also examples from our portfolio, such as Talkie.ai or SKY ENGINE AI. 📌 The current stagnation in the VC sector has led to lower startup valuations, benefiting funds in executing transactions. In Poland, VC fund conditions will remain favorable in the coming years, but careful selection of AI companies is necessary, as most new entities have little chance of building lasting entry barriers. Migration Policy and Demographic Crisis: How and Why Russia is Losing Its Appeal to Migrants? Recently, I commented for Haqqin.az on a complex issue: by legally restricting the rights of migrants, including labour migrants, Russian authorities claim they pose threats to national security. This raises many questions. I'll note that there are a few minor inaccuracies in the transcript of the interview. In Russia, the most illogical decisions are often justified on the grounds of security. Remember the 2000s when the cancellation of gubernatorial elections was presented as a measure to protect citizens. Similarly, now the socio-economic problems caused by the war in Ukraine, rising prices, and internal crises have been used as a pretext for shifting the blame onto migrants. Russia already has a fairly high level of xenophobia, which is now being fuelled by the authorities through propaganda and information campaigns. By increasing xenophobic sentiment, the government seeks to divert public attention from its own failures. However, such a policy exacerbates Russia's labour shortages, which are driven by many factors, the primary one being demographics. Russia's population is ageing rapidly, and as a result, the number of people of working age is decreasing. The labour market is currently seeing the entry of a smaller generation born in the 1990s and 2000s, while the larger generation from the late 1960s and early 1970s is retiring. Due to these demographic waves, the workforce has aged even further, leaving Russia in urgent need of labour resources, including migrants. It is also important to note that part of this scarce younger population has been recruited or mobilised into the military, and many are working in the defence industry. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of young people who have fled Russia for other countries. And now the government is destroying Russia's image as an attractive destination for migrants. Hello! Congratulations on start of the business season, summer is behind us. Let me take you back to my summer. I had a lot to be proud of in August. Ovkuse, starting from !ZERO audience, reached 1/3 of the Monthly Audience of closed Cookpad Russia business in a short time. New businesses are bringing profits. For instance, Online School is giving increasing sales: - We reached milestone a large, round number of Paying clients. - We added more value and features over the summer: AI assistant, folders for bookmarks - Time on site is steadily growing, it was above the market, and it's taking off even further each month. Retaining customers' attention is an important metric - Based on customer development, we launched a new format - video recipes, something like Stories, Shorts. An additional bonus is that we're increasing the share of young audience. - Improvements on the recipe page have increased the engagement of less active users and newcomers. Now an interesting, challenging time is coming! Requiring me as an experienced ship captain to navigate an ocean of issues: - High season - Maintain team spirit - Complete Roadmap 2024. The low-hanging fruit is long gone. Lack of time - the most valuable resource. - Control expenses! (High local inflation rate) → Reach break-even point As an overall result, not to fall into the valley of disappointment.
