Swiggy IPO 😀 😍 The capital markets regulator SEBI has given the big food and grocery delivery company Swiggy the go-ahead to begin its eagerly awaited $1.25 billion initial public offering. 👏 👉 Once Sebi approves both revised draft prospectuses, Swiggy will submit them under the confidential filing process. The first will address criticism from the regulator, while the second will be open for public comments for 21 days. 👉 The company won't be able to start roadshows for the IPO until after the final prospectus has been filed, according to sources. Retail investors subscribed to 97% of their portion, while Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs) made bids for 22% of their allocation. Who would invest in founders who have wasted $50M? Koo, an Indian microblogging platform, recently shut shop after raising $50M in capital. Everyone has their views on why Koo failed. IMO, the biggest reason behind its failure was a lack of PMF (Product Market Fit). Koo spent much money on marketing and didn’t build a product people wanted. It kept harping on nationalism, a Twitter for Indians, made in #India. This approach failed. However, this doesn’t mean Koo’s founders aren’t smart or intelligent. I wrote in an earlier post that we shouldn’t be surprised if Koo’s founders raise fresh capital for a new startup. To many of us, this might seem grossly unfair. Millions of smart, hardworking founders are struggling to raise capital while investors are backing failed founders who have wasted millions of dollars. How is that fair? It confirms the widely held belief that the #venturecapital industry is broken and corrupt where a few people with the right connections get all the capital while others don’t see a dime. It shows that the VC industry is a closed group, a cabal where who you know matters more than anything. While these are just complaints, most people who criticise VCs don’t understand how startup investing works. VCs welcome failures. They embrace them because they know failures are inevitable. When VCs invest in 20 #startups, they know 15 will fail. The goal is to invest in startups that can give them a 100x return. Failures are part of the game. They are unavoidable. The aim is to back founders who can build such 100x return companies. Hence, failures are not looked down upon in the VC industry. It’s similar to the American culture where society appreciates the people who take risks, and it easily accepts personal bankruptcies that result from this risk-taking approach. There’s no taboo in failing in the USA and the VC industry. I’m sure Koo’s founders have learnt from their mistakes. It’s an expensive mistake and not everyone is so lucky to have this luxury to spend $50M on their education. ;) However, most VCs will back Koo’s #founders because these founders know how to raise capital and they know how to not build and scale tech companies. Their past failures have improved their chances of future success. In the VC industry, Failure is Good.

India is at cusp IMO when it comes to consumer startups. 1. Depending on category almost 4-10x of current customer base will become "first time" customers over the next 5-7 years. thats the sheer size of the market. 2. Many categories will continue to be massive and fragmented - this means even a sub 5% market share is a couple of thousand crore opportunity. 3. With every passing year - you will have 2-3x more customers who have already brought your product/service and your repeat/retention is key if you are able to have high repeat/retention cohorts then you can continue to acquire customers at a higher CAC cos your blended CAC will be good. This means your competition will be at a disadvantage for real and it wont be a function of who has the maximum cash in the bank! If you are starting up in the consumer sector, your customer service is the biggest moat. For us at PYT - Unsolicited positive feedback (UPF) like these are the true measure of how things are. I strongly believe that if you delight customers, they do take time to call it out. The repeat/referral of such mentions are beyond any attribution, measure :) The key is to keep raising the bar and fixing the gaps. Thats what keeps us awake at night at Pickyourtrail.

Great insight, Tanish Gupta! I can't agree more with your point about closing the loop. At Splitkaro, we recognise the same challenges. Here’s how we address the settlement problem: 1. Priority Bills: Designed for transactions that need priority settlement, users receive friendly reminders, encouraging them to pay within a due date. 2. Group Chats: Automated and smart messages are sent to group chats, encouraging users to settle balances and close the group. 3. Remind Buttons: Give flexibility to users to remind friends at their will. These reminder SMSs and notifications are designed to ensure users don't feel bad about it. We have more plans to enable settlements further. Regarding your suggestions, I respectfully disagree on two points: 1. Restricting Users: If users are barred from recording expenses when unsettled, it could lead to drop-offs. Recording an expense is the basic feature that we believe should always remain accessible. 2. Transaction Fee: With free UPI transactions, making money off P2P transactions is tough, but a rewarding loop could be useful. I remember discussing #Splitkaro with you before as well. I would love for you to try Splitkaro, and if not, even your reasons for not trying would help us improve :)

India's mobile payments market has been dominated by foreign companies like Google Pay and PhonePe, but recent news suggests that the government plans to curb their dominance. It's no secret that India has the talent and resources to build comparable mobile payment technologies, so why do these foreign companies continue to dominate? According to some, the issue lies with policy makers and structural challenges. However, there are young entrepreneurs like Sahgal Yadav who are up for the challenge. I had the pleasure of meeting him four months ago, and he shared his vision for building LESS PAY, a SAAS and mobile payment technology . The only challenge he faces is relevant capital. To be honest, most VCs in India have not found product market fit (PMF) yet. I believe, you have hit PMF as a VC when you have – 1. Top 1% founders are coming to pitch to you, 2. The founder is willing to take your money at a lower price than the market might give him/her. 3. You have built capabilities to pick the founder and market you want to invest in and the confidence to pass on deals that don’t align with your vision. Best example of this is YC , ~4.5% of the startups that have gone through Y Combinator since 2010 have become billion-dollar companies.  Founders don’t just take their money—they choose YC’s standard terms even after raising at a higher price from other VCs. That’s true PMF for a VC. #VC #PMF #funding

Venture capitalists and BizDateUp co-founders Jeet Chandan and Meet Jain have acquired an undisclosed stake in IPO-bound foodtech giant Swiggy through an off-market secondary deal. Founded in 2020, BizDateUp allows angel investors to invest in Indian startups with a minimum of INR 1 lakh and recently launched a INR 200 crore fund for technology investments. The firm raised over $10 million from more than 1,000 angel investors in FY24. This move comes as several celebrities, including cricketers Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan, tennis player Rohan Bopanna, director Karan Johar, and actor Ashish Chowdhry, have also invested in Swiggy ahead of its IPO. Notably, Amitabh Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit have previously acquired stakes in the company. Recently, Splitwise Inc. has been compared to Netflix🎬! Not for its valuation or user base, but for charging the same subscription fee as Netflix (₹149/month). 💸 And this is not going to work at all for Indian consumers. The issue lies in the nature of the problem Splitwise solves, especially in India. Splitwise inherently caters to money-sensitive users, with amounts typically not exceeding ₹10,000 (split among 2-6 people). Additionally, these expenses are often irregular or short-term, such as for travel groups.✈️ In a value-oriented market like India, these issues are compounded. If Netflix struggles to get Indians to subscribe, how can Splitwise succeed?  🤔 I believe there are two major issues in managing group expenses: recording and settling expenses. While Splitwise excels at recording expenses, it falls short in providing value when it comes to settling them. This is a crucial step to closing the loop, and where the potential for revenue lies. If Splitwise or a competitor can solve the problem of settling expenses, and charge a percentage or transaction fee, it could work immensely well for Indian customers.💡Micro-transactions are the solution here. A potential solution could be inspired by Uber: requiring users to settle their last expense before creating or joining a new group. 🚗 I am open to brainstorming user behaviour, market sentiments, and user pain points with anyone at Splitwise. 💬 Follow me for more such Product Analysis.
