If you've ever created a plugin with JUCE, you've used the AudioProcessor class. This is one of the most important classes in the entire framework! A secret of mine is that I've never taken a look any further than the essential functions beyond prepareToPlay() and getNextBlock(). Alright continuing on with my virtual machine journey... Today's plan was make starting VMs dynamic, but that's no fun, so skipped ahead one level... Networking dynamicism! Nope, not full software-defined networking yet, just the fundamentals: Create a bridge interface to route all VMs tap interface that's connected to the VM, so we can route traffic though. It's not working yet, but here's a diagram below of how it'll look, that should be less confusing. Anyway, that's been today, creating things like host IDs from relative IP segmenting, so I can generate MAC addresses to connect to the tap interfaces, etc. But at least that part works. Won't be at a point where I can test this yet, still need to do that dynamic part, but will do that tomorrow.

There are a lot of jobs from AI, but they are all temporary and shortsighted. Some know this. Gig workers that train AI and construction crews that build new AI data centers understand the temporary nature of their jobs, but software engineers who do the actual coding seem to think they'll still be needed when they're done training AI to train itself. Insane. This reminds me of my job at TSC, a consulting firm I worked at in 1998-1999. We had a legacy payroll process where someone on my team of engineers had to be present overnight to kick off scripts and load paper into the printers or it would all go kablooy and delay payroll and client billing. So a team of three plus one manager all worked on automating that system and turned it paperless. All accounting needed to do was put a blank CD in the tray, type in a payroll date and press enter, and within hours they would have a disk with reports and viewer app burned on it. We didn't need to be present to kick off scripts or load paper anymore. We had automated everything. Then the unthinkable happened. It was Y2k time, where all consulting firms either helped businesses make their software Y2K compliant (go to a 4 digit year for those who didn't experience it) or suffer, as no new expensive Peoplesoft or SAP installs would happen as companies braced for the end of the world on 1/1/2000. Well, the world didn't end, but what happened was my company shed employees. They hired a firm to help them streamline. Being infrastructure, I was overhead, so I found myself being interviewed for the job I already had. i told the hatchetman consultant the tale of what we did. He seemed impressed by the automation. Then he asked, "How many people does it take to maintain that system? Not all four of you I imagine." That's when reality hit me. We had automated ourselves out of our jobs. May this be a lesson to you all who think AI is the future. You're going to lose that job. #ai #artificialintelligence

For the past week I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out a bug in my game. I went deep. Multiple dives into Unreal engine code, testing and double-checking every assumption being made. I even submitted a bug report! Turns out I was triggering an "On Finished" function when my audio cue *started* playing. On Finished needed to be run, well, on finish. Kicking myself on just how silly it is. But alas, this is the nature of programming. Eight days of diligent effort vs. one misconfigured function call. Womp freaking womp.

Question to Game programmers in the industry. I am currently reading Michael Abrash's Graphics Programming Black Book. Do programmers in the industry still use assembly language for optimization? Is assemble language programming (Especially x86-64 instruction set) worth learning? In my experience in Unreal Fest, modern game dev studios, especially with Generative AI, is that they way to complete products with minimal amount of programming as possible.

When developing tools for a wide variety of artists we often overlook item inputs as being inconsequential, there's only so many options, they get there eventually right? No one has complained. Maybe we put a filter on it to help them search and move on, we've got bigger problems to deal with. The problem here is, artists are unlikely to ever report issues with these sorts of inputs. If they mispell, they blame their "fat fingers", or if they're from another studio perhaps they've been calling that option something else. Of course it's "costume" not "outfit", they need to get up to speed... It's a small thing, but it's exactly things like this that further add to the cognitive load of an artist already under pressure. Fortunately, at least the spelling one is easy to address. The python difflib module provides some fast functions to see how close one string is to another: https://lnkd.in/gAgG4TcV By using difflib.SequenceMatcher or difflib.get_close_matches we can roughly take a stab at what they are trying to find. This allows us to filter down to perhaps the top 5 items over a 60% match. It's not perfect, but it helps takes them from "How many r's in that word again?" to "Ah yes, that one". Here is a simple example using a simple Qt filter model and difflib to demonstrate easy fuzzy matching: https://lnkd.in/gEvwy4W8 Now for synonyms it's a similar process, get the synonyms for each word and fuzzy match those against the input string. I'm going to leave this as a challenge for you, hint: you can use the nltk synsets to get synonyms. ... My ridiculous version of Valve's Source 1 Engine, continued. I really like the idea of making what I call a "portal renderer" (this is not a reference to Valve's "Portal" series; it's my idea of partitioning the game world space into very large cube-like structures that communicate with each other) out of Source's old id tech BSP world. For example, I'm putting 3D models (with everything they have) into float pointers. I'm also tempted to experiment with splitting a single 3D model (with its textures) into more float * variables and adding them together (like, for example, parts of a single milk bottle that you can sometimes see in Half-Life 2); this would be funny, I want to see how this flows on the graphics card and CPU. I like testing hardware. Anyway, I hope somebody likes this stuff. To be continued. I haven't got it to boot yet, obviously. 😃 LE: I'm also really interested in putting very much of the load on OpenGL. Source 1 runs in "software mode" way too much, because it's very old and computers didn't have the graphics cards that we have today; also back then we had very little RAM.

Now, NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 uses AI to do most of the work—filling in 90% of the picture in real time after creating a rough outline. It’s faster, smarter, eventually better, and a clue into how AI will reshape graphics.

For some reason, Scrollbars snd Scroll Rects took me a few tries to really understand, but I think I have it now. Which means there's probably more that I don't even know I don't know... #unity #unityui #scrolling

My refactorings went so smooth with TDD that I decided to try to change my naive binary encoder that produced lists of bytes into producing efficient bytestrings. I feared I was falling prey to premature optimization. But it took me a few minutes and now my tests execute literally ten times faster (my whole test suite went from a sluggish 8s to a blazing 800ms). Definitely worth it. It's incredible how easy some things become when you have a robust test suite (meaning that it checks behavior and lets you swap the implementation).

In developing #UnitTests in #Spring, I focused on managing isolated test environments. To specifically prevent state changes from one test bleeding into the next, I utilized the #DirtiesContext annotation. @DirtiesContext(classMode = ClassMode.AFTER_EACH_TEST_METHOD) tells Spring to close and recreate the application context after each test method. This ensures a clean slate for every test, preventing unintended side effects. - getUser_ShouldReturnUser: Creates a user and verifies retrieval by ID. - getUser_ShouldNotFindUser: Attempts to find the user created in the previous test by email, and fails. Without @DirtiesContext, the user created in the first test would still exist in the application context for the second test. This would lead to the second test finding the user even though it's supposed to test the "not found" scenario.
