DC-DC Conversion Collaboration: A Legacy of Innovation The Smart Power Stage (SPS), DDR5 PMIC, and TLVR are critical building blocks powering today’s xPUs and memory systems. Behind these technologies lies a remarkable history of industry collaboration that has shaped the landscape of modern power solutions. • SPS (Smart Power Stage): Initially referred to as HPMOS, SPS was co-defined by HPE, TI, and Infineon. The concept originated from a single slide #86 in the 2009 APEC Tutorial T7 presentation, laying the foundation for a transformative power delivery solution. • DDR5 PMIC: This innovation was a joint proposal by TI and HPE, as documented in the JEDEC submission. Following this, JEDEC assembled a working group comprising Intel, Samsung, Micron, Hynix, and IDT to develop the standard. TI played a pivotal role, leveraging cross-organizational expertise to create a groundbreaking package design. Their extensive work in packaging and thermal simulations ensured unparalleled board-level reliability (BLR). • TLVR (Transient Load Voltage Regulator):Originally proposed and patented by Google, TLVR stands out as an example of industrial goodwill. Google generously opened the technology to the broader industry, fostering widespread adoption and innovation. These three technologies exemplify how collaboration between companies can profoundly impact the industry. I feel privileged to have contributed to two of these initiatives and deeply appreciate the stories and teamwork that brought them to life. As we face the evolving challenges of powering AI and data centers, it is clear that even closer and more extraordinary collaborations between industry and academia will be essential. Efficient Power Conversion Corp (EPC), headquartered in El Segundo, CA, specializes in gallium nitride on silicon (eGaN) power FETs and integrated circuits for power management applications, with recent validation of their GaN intellectual property rights by the US International Trade Commission (ITC). The ITC upheld EPC's patents and found Innoscience Technology Co Ltd guilty of infringing EPC’s foundational patent, potentially leading to a ban on importing their products into the USA. This ruling is a significant validation of nearly two decades of EPC's hard work and research, reflecting the importance of their intellectual property portfolio. Telechips, Inc. is focusing on low- to mid-end SoCs to stay competitive against giants like Qualcomm and MediaTek. The company plans to mass produce its Dolphin 5 chip next month and upgrade to a 5-nanometer process for Dolphin 7 next year. Semiconductor Engineering recently put out a great piece on legacy process nodes, discussing their utility and popularity for everything from sensors to PMICs (power electronics). There’s rightly a lot of focus on the research and development happening at cutting-edge nodes like 2nm and 14-angstrom, but for the world of semiconductors outside of #HPC and #AI chips much of the interesting design work is happening on older manufacturing processes like 130nm or 90nm from the early 2000s. We’re excited to help upgrade these legacy nodes with MST-SP and MST-SPX to enhance performance in mobile PMICs, sever racks, and beyond! KIOXIA Group plots tech route to 1,000 layer 3D #NAND by 2027 #Kioxia outlined a tech roadmap to 1,000 layer 3D NAND at the IWM 2024 conference in #Seoul against a backdrop of statements from NAND fab JV partner Western Digital that #manufacturing costs are rising and returns on #investment are falling. #Startup Tackles #Chiplet Design Complexity 💡 Baya Systems is coming out of stealth mode to take the guess work out of #chiplets 👏 In a briefing with EE Times | Electronic Engineering Times, Nandan Nayampally, Baya’s chief commercial officer, said that with #SoC and chiplet system design, as well as #software development complexity exploding, there is also a growing need to accelerate analysis, design, and deployment of chiplets. He said Baya’s broader agenda is to tackle the data movement bottleneck faced by #AI workloads in #heterogeneous #computing environments, or what Baya said is now “intelligent compute.” Nayampally said a more cohesive system is necessary to reduce data movement, even as more complex #memory hierarchies and processing solutions are coupled together. Chiplets provide a solution but even with standardization, there is a need for tools to support an end-to-end workflow as software development for both them and SoCs gets more complex, he added. IDC: #Memory Makers Drive #Semiconductor Market Growth in Q1 2024 as #AI Demand Soars Latest research from #IDC, titled Worldwide #Semiconductor Integrated Device #Manufacturing Market: Top 10 Vendor Ranking and Insight, 1Q24, reveals significant trends in the #semiconductorindustry during the first quarter of 2024. The report highlights the normalization of memory applications and inventory levels, driven by a stabilizing device market and the demand for AI training and inference in #datacenters. This recovery follows the fading of the #COVID19 #pandemic. This normalization propelled the development of the integrated device manufacturing (IDM) market in the first quarter of 2024 (1Q24), where high-bandwidth #memory (#HBM) played a pivotal role. The growing demand of #HBM, priced four to five times higher than traditional memory, squeezed the capacity of #DRAM in the device market and pushed up its price, significantly boosting the overall memory market revenue. Meanwhile, newly released AI #PCs and AI #smartphones required more memory content than traditional devices, which also drove the development of the memory market. Three of the top five IDM vendors for this quarter were memory-related, capturing nearly half of the top 10 vendors' revenue. The top 10 vendors were Samsung Electronics, Intel Corporation, SK hynix, Micron Technology, Infineon Technologies, Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics, NXP Semiconductors, Sony, and Murata. But how well do we truly understand the breathtaking pace at which Chinese manufacturers like SMIC and Shanghai Huahong (Group) CO., LTD are closing the gap with their Western rivals? Here's a visual comparison of #semiconductor #technology development by market leaders such as IBM, Motorola Solutions, Intel Corporation and TSMC since 1978. The chart contrasts their progress with the achievements of #Chinese companies. The #semiconductorindustry in #China faced a widening technological gap, reaching 17 years by 2014. This year marked a turning point, as #China's State Council identified the #semiconductors industry as critical to national security in its "Outline for Advancing the National Integrated Circuit Industry". Rapidus Adds Chip Packaging Services to Plans for $32 Billion 2nm Fab To say that the global #foundry market is booming right now would be an understatement. Demand for leading-edge process technologies driven by #AI and #HPC applications is unprecedented, and with Intel Corporation joining the contract #chipmaking game, this market segment is once again becoming rather competitive as well. Yet, this is exactly the market segment that Rapidus Corporation, a foundry #startup backed by the #Japanese government and several major Japanese companies, is going to enter in 2027, when its first fab comes online, just a few years from now. In a fresh update on the status of bringing up the company's first leading-edge fab, Rapidus has revealed that they are intending to get in to the #chip packaging game as well. Once complete, the ¥5 trillion ($32 billion) fab will be offering both chip #lithography on a 2nm node, as well as packaging services for #chips produced within the facility – a notable distinction in an industry where, even if packaging isn't outsourced entirely (OSAT), it's still normally handled at dedicated facilities. Ultimately, while the company wants to serve the same clients as TSMC, Samsung Electronics, and Intel Corporation Foundry, the firm plans to do things almost completely differently than its competitors in a bid to speed up chipmaking from finishing design to getting a working chip out of the fab. with the huge focus of India on Semiconductor manufacturing and the investments done in that direction, the fabs are expected to ramp in the very near future. one aspect that all these fabs would need is to have cycle times which are fiercely competitive, quality which tends to sub PPM level, especially for Automotive and should keep an eye on carbon emission. in all of this, digitization and automation will play a key role by driving the fabs towards lean manufacturing and ensure reduction of waste,thereby striving towards 'green' manufacturing.
