FOMO is alive and well in the C-Suite. "There is very little actually adoption going on, the technology is unstable and highly error prone, programming using AI is well nigh impossible, and there are surprisingly few good use cases for why one should use AI, and the models are degrading as their own slop is poisoning their training data, but IF YOU DON'T ADOPT AI RIGHT NOW, YOU'LL REGRET IT!!!" This is quite literally where we are right now. There are variations of the theme: "You know, we should be able to tweak the algorithms and solve all of the hallucination problems, then this will work perfectly." "If we get enough data centers in place, we should be able to scale to AGI." "The market just hasn't matured enough. We'll hit the inflection point any day now, and .... boom! The sky's the limit." "If we just make the government say that we can use all the creative content of the planet for free, then we have a real good business model." I could go on, but it's just too depressing. This reminds me of the old story about a boy with a cruel father, the latter who proceeded to drop a load of horse manure in front of the Christmas tree one year. When the boy saw the pile, he smiled in glee and grabbed a shovel. The father, shocked, asked what he was doing, and the boy replied "With all this crap, there has to be a horse in there SOMEWHERE!" A question comes to mind when I hear about investments being made in the $100s of billions of dollars on AI and AGI. Where is that money coming from? Billionaires do not become so by spending their own money. Instead they use their wealth as collateral to get outsized loans that are often dozens or even 100s of times larger than their initial investment (no matter how questionable the loan), they tap pension funds as backers, and they lobby their captive congress critters to part with taxpayer money to be part of the next big thing. If they see things beginning to go pear-shaped (to borrow a metaphor from Terry Pratchett) they quietly sell off their initial stake to the bigger fool and wake away with minimal exposure when the whole thing collapses. Sometimes they even short their own stock through proxies, to make more money when the bubble bursts. Who usually ends up left holding the bag? The banks, the pension funds, the day traders, companies that bet their futures on the next big thing by firing their most expensive labor, and so on, all of whom then go crying to Uncle Sam to be made whole. This happens of course, because these companies and funds are all supposedly too big to fail, and this consequently causes taxes to go up because the government has to cover more interest on debt. This day will come, probably some time in 2025. Whoever becomes president will have to deal with this.

Thanks, Dr. Jeffrey Funk, for your detailed assessment. Greatly appreciated. This doesn't mean that "AI" isn't an important tool, but it's not a magical tool you plug in, and good schtuff happens. There is a lot of work required to first understand your organization's key business and operational initiatives (that is, how does your organization create value for its stakeholders), the desired outcomes, the key decisions you need to optimize, and the KPIs and metrics against which to measure outcomes and decision effectiveness. And also remember, that "AI" is not just a single tool, but is a category that includes many different types of "AI" including Analytical, Causal, Generative, and Autonomous. "Standardization" in manufacturing, often viewed peripherally is a criticality, more so in terms of electronics. It is a pivotal issue for development, acceptance of products and associated scales of production. The main difference between the international and national standards is perhaps in the scope, with the former looking at consistency and the latter being need specific. Unfortunately, my inference about the “third winter” of AI is receiving more and more elements that confirm it rather than refute it. We are being influenced by massive marketing campaigns to believe that AI brings productivity in a fluid and easy way. And that it is a technology that will help promote ESG concepts. What is presented as reality is the opposite. On the E side, we see more predatory mining to meet the demand for rare metals. A new agenda resurrecting nuclear energy (see Three Mile Island) and using natural resources as cooling water without control. On the S side, we are investing billions of dollars in a proposal to increase global productivity that would improve prosperity for all, but even Nobel laureate Acemoglu has already warned about the discrepancies in the theoretical calculation of this gain - in some discussions he speaks of ~0.5% while some investment banks and analysis houses speak of ~10%. This savings will be lacking in the future and the most affected side, I have no doubt, will be projects linked to social responsibility. Finally, for G, we see the imminent risk of corporate information being shared without due control because it is used to train models. Disrespect for individual privacy and general data privacy regulations. In short, we still have time to think critically and try to mitigate the effects and once again have a “winter” that will postpone the intelligent use of technology to produce prosperity, not only for big tech and its executives, but for everyone.
