if you know, you know Vinod Khosla speaks. legend. sun microsystems. juniper. wise man of sv. so have a listen. 50 investments in ai is nothing to sneeze at. aside from Reid Hoffman vinod shapes a rising tide raising all boats. had a chance to hear vinod in person. he has a bit of the warren buffet vibe. a few flew specifically to hear him. and as usual he does not disappoint. he's a visionary. top of mind. a fundraiser and open statement that (ai) in the political arena offers many benefits and with that also many concerns. clearly with a republic that respects indeed centrally adheres to free speech, (ai) offers a slippery slope in the political arena which if you are a reader of political game playing is rough. super rough. primary care for all. an (ai) tutor for all school children. these are amongst the best use cases of (ai) as it allows for a tight feedback loop to our personal development. this truly is to be applauded. frontier models. universal ones. then regional models. tailored to other cultures including india. these are wonderful affects. the message is simple. gdp. that is tied to each individual's ability to launch new businesses that flourish. that's a good thing. Llama 3 70B is already in the top 6 of all LLMs, showcasing better accuracy than much larger, proprietary models. There are three primary categories of #GenerativeAI use cases: 1. Content generation 2. Code and configuration creation 3. Automation It's no surprise that we found a link between use case and model choices. That is to say, there is no "ONE MODEL" to rule them all. Organizations will be multi-model, and they will match use cases with the model that best suits their desired outcomes. Cloud Native Resilience for a Cloud First World has never looked better than Commvault and Clumio @AWSreInvent. Being able to recover massive datasets in Amazon S3 is essential, which is why @Commvault introduced Clumio Backtrack. Do things really need to be connected to deliver on the promise of AI? Can't we just build a really big GPU? Am I getting better at ridiculous clickbait questions? Broadcom Charlie Kawwas clearly lays out the role of connectivity. Is connectivity as sexy as a GPU? That's a math problem. Let's see if we can solve it. Add the market caps of Intel Corporation AMD and Dell Technologies together. Multiply by two. Check Broadcom's market cap. Maybe there is something to this?

"It used to take 8 to 12 weeks to get a report from request to production. With Incorta, business users can do that on their own, instantaneously” (Ajit Oak, Head of Business Intelligence at Broadcom). Here was Broadcom's challenge: data stored across multiple complex business systems made it difficult to analyze fast enough. The team relied on disparate software solutions, including Workday, Oracle ERP, Model N, Oracle Demantra, and Microsoft Excel. Despite investments in a traditional data warehouse and multiple data marts, generating a new analytical dashboard or report took 6-12 weeks. The delay between business requests and production was a critical pain point. Alan Davidson, Chief Information Officer at Broadcom, explained, “Our employees can’t wait weeks for the information they need to do their jobs. But at the same time, we have billions of rows of data in our database. It’s no small challenge to quickly slice and dice that amount of information.” ➡ Broadcom needed a solution that could: Reduce the time to deliver information to employees. AND Increase department productivity without draining internal resources. Other selection criteria included cost-effectiveness, self-service capability, ease of maintenance, minimal support from other technologies, and easy integration with external applications like Microsoft Excel. Folks I've spoken to about Amazon have likely heard me talk about the importance of the PR/FAQ process, a.k.a. "the working backwards process". This blog posts gives a very nice example of a PR/FAQ. https://lnkd.in/edTeuVRQ. Note that the blog doesn't capture the presumably 100s of reviews/discussions/rewrites that this doc represents, which is a part of the real value. When the process is done it all looks so simple, but getting a large organization to make a decision to something simple and do it in a BIG way is the challenge the fun of it all.

Last week I did a presentation on "Cloud-Native Orchestration for Distributed Edge Intelligence” at the Data Innovation Summit in Stockholm, Sweden. I also manned a demo station in a booth with Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group and NVIDIA. Here are two reflections from talking about edge AI on the DIS show floor for two days. Most Nordic enterprises are still trying to wrap their heads around AI and what gains they can expect. A strong indicator of this was the high percentage of “AI consultants” roaming the show floor looking for new and interesting tools and potential customers. There seems to be an insatiable need for basic learning including guided exploration and trials. The basic sentiment was that much of the current investments in AI are defensive, think PoCs and platform trials. Organizations are currently building the competence and basic insights needed to make bigger bets down the line. A significant part of applied AI among industrial companies is moving to the edge or is being invented at the edge. I heard about numerous applications in computer vision, anomaly detection, and preventive maintenance that only work at the edge. Both because they consume enormous amounts of data that is too expensive to backhaul to the cloud, and because they need to work even in the face of upstream infrastructure issues. Both observations point toward putting investments into a platform-like infrastructure that provides a flexible and cost-effective way of experimenting with edge computing combined with AI and ensuring that the infrastructure is built with robustness and survivability at its core. This is a builder. Congratulations and well deserved on all your success Thomas S Hatch (Tom). While it says “Distinguished Engineer at Broadcom - we all know you fondly as the creator of Salt Project and a Founder of Saltstack with Marc Chenn. I would have loved to have seen it stay on the outside and independent as it was clear there was more to do and more to serve - but am thrilled to hear how it has flourished under VMware and Broadcom. I loved this part of your post, “…all difficulties in life are given to us so that we can grow and improve, in this life and in the life to come. For each of us, change is one of those difficulties, no matter how amazing the outcome may be. As such, I strive to view every difficulty as an opportunity, and while I have not always been successful at this endeavor, I do feel that I have improved at it over time.” For those who don’t know Tom well - you ought to find him and ask him more about his story. The next part is inspiring. ”…it is this belief that helped keep me strong when I had cancer, then later when I had a brain tumor, which required me to learn how to walk and talk again. Infrastructure investments often bring outsized benefits, and sub-sea cables are a prime example. Once the investment for a sub-sea cable connecting two distant points together is approved, it's relatively inexpensive to add additional "drops" near the cable's path, and doing so can transform local connectivity. Thus I'm excited to announce the Tuvalu Vaka cable, which will build on the already-announced Bulikula sub-sea cable system, and enable high-speed digital connections for the people and organizations in Tuvalu! Amazon Web Services (AWS) is at war and Andy Jassy has a new consigliere Matt Garman. Amazon.com Inc. has strategically positioned Matt Garman as the new CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS), much like a wartime consigliere in the vein of the iconic film "The Godfather." Garman assumes command in a critical era for AWS, marked by intense competition for cloud and AI supremacy. This period follows significant shifts brought about by the pandemic, a new wave of developers, and rapid advancements in generative AI technology. AWS finds itself in the midst of a fierce battleground, not only maintaining its cloud infrastructure leadership but also vying for dominance in the burgeoning AI sector. The one other wildcard in favor of AWS with Garman (besides being a product czar) is that he's very partner friendly which will be a key part of keeping AWS ahead.
