🔥 HYBRIDCASUAL IS ON FIRE! 🔥 ”TRASH TYCOON IDLE EMPIRE” BY SUPERSONIC & FUNCELL Hi, Mobile Gaming Family! 😍 The big publisher Supersonic from Unity has posted an insightful case study (link in the comments) on its recently released Hybridcasual game, “Trash Tycoon Idle Empire”. ♻️👷 Idle Tycoon is one of the game genres closest to Hypercasual. Despite the depth of the narrative, its clicker mechanics are very accessible. 👆 Not by chance, several Hypercasual publishers have released Tycoon titles. And now, in the Age of Hybridcasual, Tycoon has moved onto the development roadmap of the big publishers. “Trash Tycoon Idle Empire” is developed by Funcell Games . Funcell is a prominent studio with a portfolio of games with more than 300MM downloads. 🤯 They developed big hits such as “Idle 9 Months” (46MM) and “Dog Life Simulator!” (34MM). 👏 According to NextBigGames , life simulators are one of Funcell's core specialties. With more than 40 employees (according to their LinkedIn page), the Indian developer 🇮🇳 has extensive publishing experience with top references in the market, such as Homa, Crazy Labs, Kwalee, BoomHits, and… Supersonic. 😉 “Trash Tycoon” is not their first partnership. Together, they released big hits such as “Perfect Lie” (30MM) and “Hyper Hostess” (10MM). With “Trash Tycoon”, Supersonic and Funcell take another solid step towards Hybridcasual. 💪 And the partnership looks promising. 🤝 With the daily support of the Supersonic team, Funcell has implemented improvements to the game. Instead of using delayed gratification (a common strategy in monetizing idle simulators), the teams decided to offer constant progression by small upgrades, increasing engagement. 😍 Using a dedicated task force and an AI consultancy, they rebalanced the game's economy, finding innovative pressure points for monetization. 💰 Last but not least, the Supersonic and Funcell teams polished the UX of the game, tweaking the tutorial, interface, store, etc. What were the achievements? 🤔 👇 Look that! 👀 ⬆️ 45% IAP revenue share. ⬆️ 10 % D14 retention These KPIs impacted performance. According to AppMagic , since May “Trash Tycoon” has seen continuous growth, accumulating more than $1.5MM in IAP revenue and 6.6MM downloads. 📈 Congratulations to the Funcell and Supersonic teams for this excellent work! 👏

8Bit Gamedev Salary Pulse 2024: Interestingly, game and level designers in lead/expert positions have an average salary of $4,717, which is lower than the average $6,253 for senior designers. 😱 This represents an 18% decrease in salary when advancing to higher levels. Data on job openings in the #gamedev industry: ➡ 86% of all open positions do not offer remote work options. Only 14% of positions provide this opportunity. ➡ Asia (32.5%), Europe (28.3%), and North America (22.9%) lead in the number of open job positions. Only jobs that do not offer remote work were considered. ➡ The countries with the most job offers for gaming industry workers are: USA (16.4%), China (13.9%), UK (7.4%), Canada (6.3%), and Japan (4.2%). ➡ At the city level, Shenzhen (6.7% of all job openings) and Shanghai (4.4%) are the leaders in terms of the number of open positions. After nearly 5 years of placing people in gamedev, here are 3 surprising things I've learned along the way: 1. It was always hard to be a junior Today there are 282 vs 1777 jobs on hitmarker in favor of Mids and Seniors. But even when money from investors was flowing in ungodly amounts, studios were more inclined to hire experienced people. My conspiracy theory is that junior people had it easier back then because regulars and seniors just weren't available for studios. Sometimes because salaries were inflated, sometimes they literally couldn't land the hire, because there were multiple offers on the table for candidates.  Instead of saying it's not a great time to be a junior, we should just admit it's not a great industry to be one. 2. Most people are playing less than I expected When I started I thought everyone here played games all. the. time. And I thought I was the odd one out with my heavily limited playtime. Turns out there are more people like me, who are just playing a couple of hours per week or sometimes not at all. There are of course the opposites who wish they played more (looking at you Michal Witkowski 😎) 3. You kinda need to be into games Even if your role has nothing to do specifically with production, having an interest in games or playing them in your own time it's ALWAYS a green flag. I knew it might be the case, but what was surprising is that it's true for literally every role in a studio. It's not like not playing them eliminates you from getting the accountant job. It doesn't (I hope). But the topic "What are you playing" somehow always finds its way and sneaks into the conversation. What are your surprise learnings?

TOP-LIST NEWCOMERS ”ZENLESS ZONE ZERO”, “MINESWEEPER NETFLIX”, AND OTHERS. Last week was filled with new games on the top charts. 🏅 I'll talk about some of them below. ✅ “Zenless Zone Zero” by HoYoverse The developer of the big hits “Genshin Impact” and “Honkai: Star Rail” released its new action RPG for iOS, Android, PC, and PS5 last week: “Zenless Zone Zero”. As with previous HoYoverse games, ZZZ begins with incredible numbers. 🤯 In five days the game reached almost US$20MM in IAP revenue on the Apple store alone. Among the game reviews, I recommend Harshal Karvande's excellent article on the Naavik blog. 👉 🧠 ✅ “Schoolboy Runaway - stealth” by Linked Squad “Schoolboy” is a life simulator in which the player is a young man unhappy with his parents. As it says in the store description, “immerse yourself in the role of a schoolchild whom the parents punished for a bad grade at school, and try to escape from home without being noticed by father and mother.” 😕 Despite its ethical dilemmas, the game has become a trend in Russia 🇷🇺 and is spreading around the world. In the last two weeks, the game has accumulated more than 2MM downloads. ✅ “Wasteland Life: Survival Idle” by SayGames I mentioned "Wasteland” in my list of releases and transfers from the last half of May. It is an Idle Arcade with a Mad Max-style desert survival narrative. 🏜️💦 Developed by Tinkles Games, “Wasteland Life” started the growth stage on June 4th, reaching over 1MM so far. 📈 ✅ “Minesweeper NETFLIX” by Netflix Developed by Smoking Gun Interactive Inc. (a Keywords Studios company), this streaming giant's version of a classic puzzle Minesweeper📍💣 is amazing! And it wasn't just me who liked the game. 🤩 In just a couple of days since its release, the game has already surpassed 200k downloads. 📈 Swipe through the slides below and you'll find out about games from Supercent, Goodroid, Inc., Wonder Group, Fanatee, Ateam Inc.（株式会社エイチーム）, and others that are also on the rise. - X - This research was supported by Cost Center. Horrible news today with Rocksteady Studios Ltd being hit with a round of layoffs. According to Eurogamer, a number of employees have been laid off over the past month, with its QA department more than halved (from 33 staff to 15). Additionally, non-QA job were also affected. What is even more horrible is that the report also cites one employee who mentioned on social media that they had been informed they were being made redundant despite being in the middle of paternity leave. 😞 According to the source, the job losses are directly linked to the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, with its poor sales specifically mentioned as a reason for what it describes as “restructuring”. HYBRIDCASUAL STUDIES “PICK ME UP” BY SUPERSONIC & HIBOX Hello, Mobile Gaming Fanatics! 🤪 Last month, I posted about Supersonic from Unity's competition for new Hybridcasual titles (link in the comments). 💪 Among the sub-genres being focused on in the competition is Idle Resource Management (IRM). To support your search for a new IRM 🤩, I bring you a study of the new game that is starting to be successful, “Pick Me Up”. Developed by Hibox and published by Supersonic, “Pick Me Up” is an excellent case of how to build an IRM game from an everyday theme. The theme of “Pick Me Up” is the car-sharing business (a.k.a. Hippity Happy Monday! Another week, ANOTHER JOB! Do you like Gameplay AI? Are you Crazy for Creatures? Mad for Mobs!? I don't have any more alliterations in me right now, but we're looking for someone to create believable creature behaviors for our game. If you've seen any of the nature docs and ever thought that it would be awesome to somehow make one within a brand new universe (specific dream, I know), then this might be for you! This is a mid-level (3-6 yrs) role, but if you have a couple years of professional dev in C++ and Unreal games, and have a genuine love and desire to learn gameplay AI we could chat too. What we can't train up is the very solid use of C++ and dev experience in Unreal. Sorry Unity-only folks, we really need someone w/ some prior experience here. Just like I said in my last post I will read every app and cover letter, but please only write a cover letter if you think it has something your resume couldn't tell. I do not prioritize folks that have one vs not. One thing I'd love to see in that section is any work you've done with creature AI behaviors if you got any. Anyway, gl;hf! NEW GAME TRENDING SUPERMARKET SIMULATOR (ROUND 2) In April, I published a post about the new trend of supermarket simulators 🛒 in the games industry. There I mentioned that this trend emerged on Steam (by Valve corporation) under the title "Supermarket Simulator", developed by Nokta Games. The trend quickly spread to the mobile market and spawned some hits, such as "Supermarket Manager Simulator" by Polish studio Digital Melody Games. 🇵🇱 At that time, the games that took advantage of this trend reached around 35MM downloads and US$512k in IAP revenue. What has happened since then? 🤔 Well… some gaming studios have read my post 🤣 and launched their versions of supermarket simulators. And back to single-player projects, well never expected I would be jumping between so many types and genres for my studies. This one is mostly focused on a point-and-click movement controller. With my current system setup, the left mouse button is mostly focused on movement and interaction, whereas the right mouse button is focused on combat and attacking. Currently, there are no attacks set up yet, however, I have made it so that the RMB will interact with objects tagged as Enemy only as opposed to the ground layer for movement on the LMB, this also includes setting different stopping distances between the two actions. The RMB stopping distance is determined by the attacking range of the player, which the weapon would later on determine typed that the player has equipped. I have also set it up so that the player would follow the target selected by the RMB action, however, this can be canceled via the LMB action, I have not yet implemented the enemy response to being attacked, however, I have started setting up the states for it within the NPC controller script. Mostly I am planning to have two different states for NPCs that are being attacked, one that would fight to the death, and another that would fight up to a certain percentage of HP and then attempt to flee from the player. #studentGameDev #madeWithUnity #indieGameDev #gameDev

How I'm managing 3 co-dev contracts: Business has been going well. Recently we signed 3 gaming contracts with vastly different requirements. 1. Adapting 2 styles together The 1st contract is an Asian art-style game that has to fit Western markets. We were tasked to make the game globally accessible. Using a Western-like art style, we are refining the game. 2. Scaling stage The 2nd contract is with a game that's got the green light. They want to take their game to the next level. 3. Requiring high-quality development The 3rd contract is with an existing client. Know, like and trust is already built. They need high calibre development, so we keep going. What I enjoy the most about the work we do at UGI: - Flexibility - Adaptability - Variety Because every contract is treated with care. Key to managing multiple projects is genuinely understanding.
