How should a communications pro navigate stakeholder messages in this election-dominated climate? ❌ Unless your brand ethos is squarely linked to partisan or issue-driven politics and/or you have some useful data or insight that will help reporters do their job, save your news for mid-November. 🤫 Of course, you may be required to release something because you are a public company. (I also expect that some companies who have bad news to share might choose to bury it next Tuesday.) ⁉️ Monitor the news cycle closely, stay agile and be ready to adjust. The only thing any election watcher knows is that the outcome will be thisclose. Expect a prolonged period of post-election noise, as well as news organizations assigning stories about potential implications on the macro and micro economic front, the regulatory landscape, etc. 🕶️ Just because your brand may "go dark" on media relations or social media during election week doesn't mean you should do same for communication with other stakeholders. ICYMI: Climate Tech Marketer rebranded to The Climate Communicator near the end of 2024. Annnnnd... We're having a lot more fun with it now 🎉 (unless you count last night, when I was spiraling into a state of despondency while reading responses to the Elon Musk X thread I landed on while researching cultural responses to the wildfires ravaging LA right now) ANYWAY. Earlier this week, Amelia published an excellent piece about how the issue-attention cycle undermines climate communications. 'It seems that, as a group, we can’t sustain intense interest for very long. Once the shock factor wears off, life goes on. The problem is probably even worse now, when microwave culture has given us three-second goldfish brains always looking for our next dose of online outrage.' *deep sigh* 👆 yup. It seems that the climate movement has reached Stage 5 of the cycle — the Post-Problem Stage. Check out the article for some possible remedies to a few important questions: 1. How do we keep our audiences interested in climate change when most people are tired of hearing about it? 2. How do we talk about something year-round that most people only care about periodically? A peek into the NYC hustle that was #climateweek and my focus for our clients >> Transforming Climate Action from a Divisive Issue to a Unifying Cause << Brands must position themselves as not only environmentally conscious but also operationally efficient. By framing climate action as a means to preserve what is familiar and valuable—like jobs, economic growth, and American industry—climate messaging becomes less divisive and more unifying. During Climate Week, many industry leaders echoed this theme of collaboration and alignment. The consensus? When it comes to sustainability, we don't compete—we collaborate. After 3 thought provoking talks at last night's Climate Tech Time event, I'm feeling inspired, but also more than a little anxious about going outside without an industrial dust mask on. Sarah Montgomery, co-founder and CEO of Infyos reminded us where our electric vehicle batteries come from and challenged us to take our battery providers to task over some of their shockingly bad supply chains (I'm drafting my letter now), followed by Dr David Kim, founder and CEO of CyanoCapture who talked about how his team's newly created, genetically engineered photosynthetic bacteria "can actually solve climate change" (and do it cost effectively) by not only capturing and absorbing carbon, but turning 99% of it into biomass. Very inspiring and, as if that wasn't enough, he also casually broke the news that there's a new malaria vaccine made from yeast which we will soon be hearing about, recently deployed in Senegal, which will eradicate malaria! And then there was Gunnlaugur Erlendsson, founder and CEO of the fellow certified BCorp ENSO - 2023 Earthshot Prize Finalist, who has made me unhealthily obsessed with how toxic and polluting tyres are - apparently inherently so. From the raw materials, to the production (all extremely fossil fuel intensive), to using tyres every day (tyre dust, as the tyre wears down, represents 28% of primary microplastics, which we're all breathing in constantly), to the disposal (tyres are the largest source of primary microplastic pollution in the oceans). Globally, tyres emit 6 million tons of pollution each year, and more air pollution is generated from tyres than tailpipes, so it was a relief to hear that ENZO is on the case, and that very soon we'll be able to buy non toxic tyres that are energy efficient and will not only last longer, but at the end of their lives will be recycled and remade, as part of a new circular business model for tyres. I'm very glad to announce the 2024 edition of the Purpose Pulse - published by Purpose Union and our partners Root Cause and the Brand & Reputation Collective. This new report explores Gen Z and Millennial expectations around corporate social responsibility and DEI. We surveyed respondents to understand how these generations view businesses and their commitment to social and environmental issues. Core insights: ▶ Our findings show that Gen Z and Millennials expect businesses to do more to tackle social issues, and this expectation is growing. This expectation has grown over the past 4 years. ▶ The Purpose Pulse finds that the majority of Gen Z and Millennials believe that businesses are not doing enough to address climate change. ▶ The business case for DEI is significantly less persuasive than the principled-based case ▶ Despite low trust in institutions, 16-43 year-olds are demanding more action from businesses and policymakers.   Engaging more rigorously with this agenda is the path to building trust and improving reputation with these audiences. Whether I’m working with climate tech teams or helping people build their personal brands, I keep coming back to one thing: if you want people to get it, keep it simple. In my experience working in climate tech, concepts are layered with scientific jargon, dense data, and specifics that can make even the most interesting projects sound... dull. It’s easy to lose people in the technical details. So I work with their teams to break it down into messages that feel more human, like something you’d explain to a friend who’s hearing it for the first time. With personal brands, the people I find I relate to most have messaging that makes me feel like we’re having a one-on-one conversation. It’s direct, it’s human, and it makes it easier to connect. Simplifying doesn't mean making it shallow. In the words of Maya Angelou ““People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” That’s what clear, relatable messaging does. It makes you feel something real and that’s what people remember.

I was already pretty nervous about presenting to a room full of leading scientists and creatives at Climate Week, and then this happened. Six of the most terrifying words in the English language - especially when they come from your daughter 😲 "What are you going to wear?" Up to that point I had been thinking about fumbling my lines or whether I would be chased out of Climate Week for heresy. But this question opened up new levels of terror. In the end though, it was the perfect example of what we were talking about. 'What are you going to wear?' is all about how we see ourselves in the world and how we see others. It is about the way we take information like where we are going and who we are meeting, and process it through the operating system of 'culture' to decide how we will act. Do we want to fit in or stand out, do we want to look fun or smart, what do we think about the people around us? When political rhetoric (also known as hype or, more accurately, bs) meets pragmatic economic reality: Q4 2023 In November, the Net Zero Policy Lab at Johns Hopkins University released a study focused on the domestic and global impacts of tinkering with Biden’s climate bills, in particular, the IRA. “Our scenario analysis shows that U.S. repeal of the IRA would, in the most likely scenario, harm U.S. manufacturing and trade and create up to $80 billion in investment opportunities for other countries, including major U.S. competitors like China,” the study said. “U.S. harm would come in the form of lost factories, lost jobs, lost tax revenue and up to $50 billion in lost exports. #esgcreatesjobs #profitablesustainability #jobs #exports #fundamentaleconomics
